Boutique Timbers and Cedarworks Timber Auction Sunday 23 Sept 18
It's that time of the year again. Goes too damn fast.
The annual timber auction will be he at the Rollands Plains Recreation Ground on Sunday 23rd September. Camping facilities available at the Showground and we put on a BBQ dinner on the Saturday night before the auction.
Expect around 400+ lots including over 100 slabs.
This year there will be over 20 red cedar slabs, of which 4 will be over 4 metres long.
Plenty of camphor slabs and boards, plus rosewood slabs and boards, snakewood, mackay cedar, NG rosewood, Qld maple, yellow walnut, Huon pine,Gidgee, hairy oak, blackwood, silky oak, jarrah boards and slabs, callophyllum, white beech, hardwood slabs and boards.
Photos show some of the red cedar that will be for sale, dark Hunter valley, slabs to 4.9m long with interesting coffee tables.
I'll post more photos as we begin to get organised.
Hope to welcome some of you there.
Regards
Greg

Hey Greg. I was just wondering how the auction works? Is it literally a small auction for individual lots that we bid on?
And is there are a pricing list or guide to accompany the auction for us newbies. I haven’t got too much experience in buying timber like this so I’m a little worried I’ll either overbid for what it’s worth or come home empty handed. Thanks

Hi Storm’,
There’ll be plenty of forum people lIke myself there. I’ll send you my mobile number by PM so you can ring me on the day and I’ll show you the ropes. The lots are laid out in sequence and the auctioneers move from lot to lot. “About 400 lots” means the auction will be going well into the afternoon so it will be a good idea to print out the list and mark the lots you might be interested in so that gives you an idea when you can slope off to grab a drink or sanga sandwich. The Saturday bbq is good value too if you can make it.

Greg, will an auction list be available prior to the auction? Very tempting but a long trek from FNQ.

I'll post a lot list next week as a file. Let me know if anything grabs you.
Travelling is like freight, sometime it costs more than the timber.

This photo might show how things go. All of the bundled piles and slabs are a 'lot'. Starts at lot 1 and you walk along lot by lot until done. Everyone has a bidding card and there is proper auctioneers running it etc. It takes 4+ hours so bring a hat (or rain coat...) and money for the sausage sizzle. The payment process at the end is much more streamlined now, and they take credit if you're wondering.
Most lots don't have a specific minimum bid, so you can come away with some great bargains. What it's worth I guess is up to you and the other bidders.

Auction Lot List 23 September 2018
We are getting close to the date and getting sore backs and a little tired and the worst is yet to come when all the timber packs have to be transported to the Rollands Plains Recreation Ground and arranged in lot list number
I attach a PDF lot list for the around 400 lots, over 120 slabs and plenty of mixed and exotics.
I'll post some photos when they are arranged on site.
It's a community event, the local Trust arranges 'Kempsey Stock and Land' auctioneers and puts on coffee and meals and are also paid a percentage of the sale proceeds.
That was around $4000 for the last few years
Thanks and Regards

I'll post this on a few luthiers forums.
Honduran mahogany is highly prized.
I'd wager that snakewood and zebrano goes for a pretty penny.

You would be amazed with some of the bargains WoodPixel.
I think the Zebrano was around $100 for a slab 3m x 400cm x 25mm last year.
If you miss the one you are after there is sure be other quality timber to make you happy.Scally
