Okay after some dispute and issues due to my not being sure when I will be returning to work, today I found I will be flying out on Wednesday so today while I was in Perth for the docs appointment her highness went and put our items into the show on October 28

Thing was she entered a couple of mine too!!!

So to those who may be interested she has entered

    Joshys tray (Junior woodworkers section)
Joshys quilted pillow (Junior craft section)
Her nautical compass quilt (Quilters section)
    Her quilted pillow (Quilters section)
My plum mug (Woodturning other section)
My Artists paintbrush box (Woodwork section)
    My Quilters case (Woodwork section)
My Veneer Painting "Home before the storm" (Art mixed media section)

Now to wait and see how we get on eh? THANK GAWD I wont be here to be embarressed the hell out of! That parts all hers! Now if we can get the others stirred up and creative juices flowing we can take over the whole friggin show!!! mmm I may have to take up painting eh

    Default Glad you asked Pat!

    Rightio then!!

While I was away the Brunswick Show happened... some great news and some bloody hurtful disappointing news with that show but for this post the good news... then the second will relate the bad news

    Good news!!

Joshy WON first prize in the junior woodwork catagory with this:

Then promptly WON the first prize in the junior quilter section with his pillow:

I although I didnt actually WANT to entre due to several reasons that shall remain silent but was entered by her bloody highness...

    Sooo...

I won the woodworking general secation with this... (quilters fat quater case)

I came second in the woodworking section with this... (Artists paintbrush box)

So we had some success... and I was absolutely GOBBLOODYSMACKED!!... as was young Joshy

    BUT!!!...

    Default The "but"...

    But

    She had also entered this...

    and this...

The first they couldnt get a handle on what it was... woodwork or art... but then one bright well dim actually spark decided that since there was no paint in the picture it was NOT "art" and therefore must be woodwork or as the galah put it when Jo asked "craft" section... so they stuck it in the woodwork section not a chance in hell of winnning since Id already won and second placed that section to bits! But my arguement is... it is a picture just as a painting is a picture or a photo is a picture therefore it is "art" it shows a scene therefore it is "art" just because it is done using the medium of veneers does not make it less art than a painting etc... but to these simple minded one eyed bloody small town small minded idiots this is nothing but "craft" and therefore less than "art"

The second I well to be honest it was my first real peice of turning so didnt really expect anything... but then it would have been good eh?

    Next BUT...

Was this quilt Jo spent near on a week every day on...

and this a miniture quilt she spent 2 days on using over 200 tiny peices...

With regard the first... the setup was apparently biased toward what was called the "Brunswick quilters club" with only peices made by members of that "club" being shown on this "club" there is nothing in the local phone book local link local area information things that any such "club" exists! Which is why when Jo started quilting and looking into clubs she ended up going 30 klicks up the road to Harvey to join their club because there WASNT one here! now of a sudden there is?... anyway there were a fair few quilts on display but these were only quilts done by members of that "club" ANYONE who wasnt a member of that "club" who submitted a quilt had theirs folded and stuck on a table no picure to show what it was or anything else... and the winning quilt was also one done by a member of this "club"

So although Jo had spent almost a week solid working on this peice getting everything to line up perfectly making sure the thing was right on the money... shes just like that any mistakes she starts again!... and then took the effort to submit it NOT expexting to win but just for the opportunity to "show" her work it was folded up and stuck on the table! No one saw it... just like no one saw the others done by non members of this until now non existant "club"

On the second... when Tiffany went to pick up the items the woman who handed it to her showed her small town small mindedness by saying "Oh tell your mother next time put it in the pot holder section its really not a quilt either properly or in miniture you know" Tiffany asked her if she had even bothered to look at the peice her answer was "Why? its only a pot holder deary" TIffany being her mothers daughter with her fathers temper said "Lady mum spent over 2 days making that MINITURE QUILT if you had bothered to even look you would see the quilting in it you would even see that she used over 200 separate little peices and you may even have considered that she made this peice SPECIFICALLY for this show! iT IS NOT a pot holder a tea cosy it IS A MINITURE QUILT" the woman huffed and walked away

In both these two peices Jo failed even to have the most basic of courtesies shown to her work that of allowing it to be shown... that courtesy was ONLY shown to members of this club... she was hurt disgusted and distraught when she called me that night not because she hadnt won for us that doesnt matter but that the stewards had folded it so it couldnt be seen they didnt even bother to have a photo (either asked for which would have been given at the time or done for her at small cost perhaps) of the item so it was unable to be "shown" and therefore no one saw the effort and time she spent making it which believe me was considerable!... the prizes were given to members of the to now non existant club the honerable mention was given to a member of this club and ONLY those made by members of this bloody club were shown... NO ONE ELSES!

If there is a club in town or that wants to have some items presented at the show under their name and banner then surely the members of that club could have a "competion" within the membership of works and the resulting 3 - 6 winners be the clubs as a club showing the members could then enter as individuals and thus more INDIVIDUAL people would stand a chance of at least having their hard work shown!

Mind you when she went to get the first and second prize for my own work she had some dramas with the bloke who had "the power" (little small town small minded tin gods! ) who wouldnt let her recieve either the peices or the prize!! In his view regardless if she had the ticket the same surname or whatever I and only I could pick up the peices and prize!... she was quite upset with the attitude and explained that the woman who accepted the registration of the peices KNEW that I worked away and wouldnt be able to pick them up and KNEW that she or mum would have to... he became quite stroppy about it until a friend from Perth went slightly psycho at him explaining that there was NO WAY I could pick them up since I was 3000 miles away in the damned desert working!... he huffed and tossed yes TOSSED the prize at Tiffany and would have thrown the items if Merle and Joshua hadnt got to them before he did... from both Merle and Tiff there oppinion was that he was rude to say the least... and as he was the "steward" he had the "I am the power" mode on full blast

I am glad that I wasnt here for this show... in another way Im sorry I wasnt Im glad because I dont like seeing anyones work cast aside and not shown in preference to a clubs when its advertised and presented as a public infividuals entry competition so I would have had quite a bit to say... on the other hand Im sorry I wasnt here because as I said it really did upset Jo that they could treat peoples efforts skills work and everything that goes into what they do with so much contempt... none of the quilts folded had anyway of being able to see the designs or effort only those shown by this "club"... and I wasnt here to hold her which was what she needed.

So while on one hand it was a succcessfull weekend for me and young Josh it was a very upsetting weekend for Jody. She didnt touch her quilting until Monday afternoon Tiffany reckoned she just looked at it shrugged her shoulders and wouldnt go near it till young Aaron asked her why she wasnt doin any... then she went and started working on a small childs one and as both Tiff and Aaron said when I got home "it was good she started smiling and just went for it again"

Small town small narrow minded people who cant see beyond their own desires. pathetic. We actually wonder how those other ladies are feeling having seen all their work and effort tossed to one side like so much flotsam folded and just wiped away

Firstly, Congratulations to you and your son for your accomplishment.
Congratulations to your wife as well, very nice quilt, I can appreciate the work that went into it, (I dont have the patience, tried it at one stage)
You mentioned that anyone not a menber of "the club" had their quilts folded on tables as well. Just an idea, a fair few of these ladies might be "as happy" as your wife about this, If your wife knows some of these people, would it be an idea to start up another quilters club?, or even just to catch up with a few other like minded ladies in the town, have their own display board next year, and beat the pants off "the club"?
Be a nice turnaround. Just an idea

Perhaps you need to make a quilt stand, so the quilts and stand are all displayed at the same time - bugger their table altogether!

    Thanks!!

tameriska good idea... Jo wont though shes written a letter asking a few questions but doesnt think it will do any good considering the small mindedness of these people... also she enjoys the group she goes to meet with in Harvey a few are a fair bit older than her and shes the youngest among them which she enjoys!

She has one "older" lady in her late 80s who she spends a lot of time with talking about designs colors and such and gets a lot of feedback from... very interesting lady actually has been quilting for something like 50 years also does the other things Jo does such as tatting and crochet stuff so they have a lot in common... she goes to the group meetings and spends her time making up her quilts and takes them along to show them as they do theirs each giving honest genuine opinions and expressions which is what she needs from people not attached to her... we all love her gear! so were biased

One lady when commenting about that quilt asked her if she was married to a sailor or someone who is away in the navy she laughed and said "a wannabe sailor for sure but I just liked the design and changed it as I needed to it will be a gift for one of my uncles in England" he being a once was a sailor and her favorite uncle... another lady was honest enough to say that she thought that perhpas Jo had put to much flounce and flowery stuff on the lettering so she tried it with less and left it that way... learning from each other.

This town has shown us a few times now just how small and narrow minded they are... first with the non existant help during and after the flood last year then with when Jo got sick while I was away and now this... funny though Ive said it before Ive lived in many small towns even Childow which when I lived there was a town of 50 people and no other town has been like this every other town helps out when and where they can they look after each other they take the time to get to know each other and most importantly theyre fair... this town is the direct opposite... owned by a few families its only interested in those families and their extended families interest nothing else matters

Oh! And I reckon the only reason Joshy won was cause there wasnt any other boy in the quilting section and only a few in the junior section I only won because the case was SO bloody different it stunned the hell out of them and the box was so unusual they had to win... also there wasnt many other entrants whereas the quilt section was chockers with this clubs entries

ANYWAY!! No wukkers Jos a strong wee tiny sheila and will rebound full of vim and vigor tell em all to go take a flyin leap and get on!

Ding, congrats to you and your boy for the wind. Commiserations to your lovely wife for her having to put up with the small mindedness of some insular pepole. One question, do those people play banjo's????

Those pieces are all excellent Dingo, congratulations to the whole family. Josh's tray is a real eye-catcher, and I reckon he might have stirred the possum a bit by taking out the junior quilt section.
