Default Build your own house out of wood

This is a link to the ABC's iView site and one of the Grand Designs episode. It is the story of Ben who built his wooden house in England using very traditional methods. It's an eco-friendly house and the dark siders will love the methods and tools. It will only be available for another 11 days. Enjoy!

I just watched that whole show. Brilliant What an idealic way of life. I imagine the English winters might not be quite as much fun though
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Wonderful show. Wouldn't it be terrific to have the opportunity to to do the build, or even renovate with enough money to work to your imagination?

I remember watching the original version of that episode a few years back now.

Out of all the houses that I have seen on grand designs this one is the closest to what I would like to build for myself.

I have done some research into straw bale houses, and they are an excellent, cheap thermal storing mass. That will keep you warmer and cooler then brick ever will. The larger the mass the slower the temperature shifts.

My dream is to build a straw bale house either in Tasmania or NZ, within the next decade. I even have done basic drawings of my house.

Thanks very much for making the video available. I watched the whole thing and was inspired by the guys outlook on life and lifestyle. Love to be able to do that. What an inspiration for his children.
    Thanks again

Yes it is one of my favourite episodes. I have watched several series of Grand Designs and it is always very interesting, and inspiring when you see some of the wrecks people buy and renovate.

When I first saw Ben I thought he was a bit fanatical, but came to realise that he just wants to travel a different road to most of us. He has no need for a "MacMansion" with 5 bedrooms etc. His joy is of "sitting lightly" in the forest and appreciating nature and the quiet beauty of his land, and not having a giant mortgage to pay off.

His house is probably not my cup of tea (a bit too rustic), but I like his sustainable ideals and I loved the setting. If only the Pommy winters weren't so savage!!

Roll on the next series of Grand Designs!!
