Jake
to get a ball park on the costs, the best would be to review the "Great 2005 Lee Valley Clamp Order" thread
but to give an idea, if the order goes ahead the items would most probably ship in a 20ft container
Customs Duties are almost certainly payable with the rate depending on what the items are, where they were manufactured, and if Australia has a trade agreement with the country of origin.
GST is payable on the goods plus shipping costs
don't even think about dodgy paperwork trying to show the contents are worth less to avoid customs and GST -- besides being an offence for both the shipper and the recipient, Customs can sieze the goods and either destroy them or auction them off to the highest bidder (do you feel like paying twice for your cyclone?)
for an estimate of domestic shipping costs, have a look at costs in the latest hardwood buy

Hugh
Although the house attached to the garage has 3 phase power (to run an air conditioner), it's not my house so getting 3 phase connected to the garage would be a large cost for another's benefit. There is already one 15A outlet which I use for the jointer/thicknesser.
I thought 1 HP was equivalent to about 780W, making 3 HP about 2350W and therefore achievable with 10A.
I guess I'm mistaken
I'll have to do some sums.

I'm sorry if I come accross pushy. I don't want to be a pain.
The problem for me is, I'll be leaving work soon and attempting to start my own business. It won't be long before the sheds a mess without DE. I'd like to get it setup before then.
And also, I fear the things we have to worry about in this kind of transaction are so numerious its going to be tricky to find a solution where everyones happy with. If it drags on too long some people will loose interest and drop out. We have to compromise. There's always going to be a saving after all postages and fees with this group buy(right?)
If there is to be a group buy, then we need to iron out a few details
-A big one is where do we ship them to?
If they go to the place with the most orders, say brissie, then my cost goes up by the shipping to melbourne
If they go to the place in the middle, what's it called?, sydney or somesuch, then more people pay to on-ship but pay less.
Wherever they go the folks who don't have shipping-on charges can make up for it by handling the import/collection/distribution side of things. that would be paperwork, customs and collecting money (people could pay ed direct but customs will want one person to deal with.)
I don't think in the middle (sydney) matters. as long as we have someone to pick anything up. At the moment there's nobody putting their had up to do it. I feel the need to put my hand up even though I'm not really savy with this sort of thing. My wife does everything for me thankgod. All I want to know is woodwork. ......But I don't mind traveling to Brisbane (about 3 hours away) picking it all up and disperse it all to you blokes as long as I know what I'm doing when I get there.
If someone here could work out where I need to go at the Brisbane port....who to give money too...what to sign and not sign....etc.... tell me what to do. I'll do it.
I don't have any problem paying for fuel to get there and back.
I have a dual cab truck. Tray in the back. Roof racks. I can bring it all back to kyogle, pack it all up nicely in bubble wrap or whatever you want. and send it all off to everyone.
Secondly - who wants one (or two).
C'mon people, who wants one?
Maybe just not enough people just arn't reading this thread ?
uno....start a new thread . Something like.
'Group buy of Clearvue cyclones - get your order in before October' .
I have to go to work. I'll be back on line this afternoon.
ps. I managed to read all of Bills site. Did exaust me. But your right, its brilliant. Printed it all out to show my boss. Will cross out the 'basic' part in the name so he doesn't feel discouraged to read. He's quite an experienced woodworker.I can see him thinking ....
' I don't need educating on 'basic's !! ' ....

I've been reading thus thread as it interests me, although I'm not interested in buying one for I have a 2hp DC and since converted into a proper cyclone.
I agree that not enough people are interested in the thread as most want a simple solution to their dust problem at a reasonable cost. Long debates about technical details are not helpful to most.
The heading does not make it clear that this is about cyclones but only about DC's which are readily available locally without a group buy.
Further there is no ball park figure quoted (even if this turns out to be wrong) to decide if it is within the price range a member could afford.
So a new thread with a bit more pertinent details would be helpful together with an accompanying thread for thrashing out and educating about the finer technical details. And ofcourse time is of the essence else interest wanes and alternatives may be bought instead.
My thoughts for what's it worth.
Peter.

Don't know why you blokes want to worry about this, particularly when you see what Watson has made for next to nicks, which will suit me.

NO, i was mistaken. i had them around the wrong way
3 HP is about 2350 watts so you can run a 10 amp 3hp motor (i got confused because my table saw was advertised as 3 HP but is rated at 18 amps, and my planer was advertised as 3hp but is rated at 13 amps - go figure),
You can cannibalise your DC and use the blower on Ed's cyclone, and have a larger fan posted over in a couple of years.
As for the power, i understand your point of view. I'm renting too (will start building next year?) but i paid for a couple of new powerpoints, and i wish i'd done it earlier.
You will be pretty happy with 3 HP i guess
I'm always impressed wheni see the contraption that we build in or sheds, and i congradulate watson and sturdee on their skill and ingenuity BUT the efficiency (ie sepatation) depends on the design. Cyclones are used as separators in some industries (ie. to remove the heavier grain and blow off the chaff).
It is not the large bits that are the serious problem, it is the small (read - tiny, itsy-bitsy,minute ) particles that cause problems.
So any cyclone that collects "about 95%" is probably collecting almost 100% of the big stuff and almost 0% of the small stuff
The cyclones sold to hobbiests are usually scaled down versions of big ones used in industry. In these places they just want the chips to fall out so they can spray the small stuff into the air without anyone noticing
The homemade ones may not be on the high side when it comes to efficiency, i'd like to hear how often the filters need cleaning, and how quickly the suction drops off
I always find that there are two groups when it comes to cyclones, the '"whaddayawanna gotallthatroulefor, dust won't hurt ya,ya pansy" or the "Get absolutely all you can, don't muck around"
Guess which side i'm on
As for quality, i have a GMC hand planer because i only use it once a month, i have a festool Dust Vac because i use it everyday.
Quality where it counts
Jake, we can use this thread to thrash out the detail, hopefully pick up some interest, make a few conversions, and when we have a definite plan we can start a thread like "Clearvue Cyclone Delivered To Your Door for $XXX - Who Wants One?"

No offence sturee, i like your cyclone, but if your still using the two cloth bag DC filters you'd be lucky to get down to 20 micron, let alone 0.5 micron.

I'm for starting a new thread showing "group buy etc etc" but we do need prices and a drop off point. Brisbane is OK although Sydney may be better. Parcel freight depends on weight/size but perhaps we could get a bulk rate with Startrak or one of its many competitors.
Jakes offer is the only one on the table at the moment, but it would be better if we had someone closer to a port and perhaps more central.
Whatever we do no shonky stuff with customs, its not worth the risk. Surely we could pay Clearvue direct and leave it up to customs to decide if they will hit us with the extra for duty and GST. They may not unless they decide its really just one big order and not a series of seperate ones, whatever if we assume a 15% hit at our end then we wont be dissapointed if it happens.

I have been watching this thread. When Ed gets back from his sojourn on Wednesday Our time I will start a new thread for those interested in purchasing one.

I'm with johnc, messing with Customs is not advisable. I am interested in getting one as well, depending on cost and options. I would like a remote switch though, without that I don't think I'd want to go ahead.

I used to be very ...'she'll be right....dont worry about dust ' ...sort of bloke too.
But unfortunately, I think its one of things that experience doesn't teach. Because,
you can't see the problem (the dust is too fine) and the visible stuff gets sucked up readily enough that we think 'alls well'. And the affects of dust are gradual. So its not an immediatly obvious thing.
But, even if your not too concerned about the health side of it. Just think of the performance you'll get from it !!! Sounds like its up there as the most efficient Extractor you can buy. To make them healthy, they have to maintain a high CFM. Brilliant. Its all proven. Reliable stats back it up. Not like the rubbish stats they put beside machines in catalogs. How can you rely on them. Don't know what your buying. No more crap machines that need cleaning all the time.
Jake, we can use this thread to thrash out the detail, hopefully pick up some interest, make a few conversions, and when we have a definite plan we can start a thread like "Clearvue Cyclone Delivered To Your Door for - Who Wants One?"
I think, If then by the 1st of October we haven't got a confirmed 5 cyclone units ( that Ed quoted to get the discount) and whatever number of minis (forgotton) we extend the date on the threads heading...and access again when that new time comes.
But if by that date we have them, I'd like it if we could agree to make the order straight away.
I spoke to my boss at smoko....he seems keen. He's taken my printouts to read over at home. Will give his decision tomorrow.
He, as well as I thought that all we'll need are the cyclone body's, blower and impellers....no filters.(thinking to just vent outside, which may even up performance ?) .we see no problem with buying motors here in Australia.

I just got confirmation from Ed on the 3 phase motor he has.
It will work on our 50Hz 415V mains. He says it will carry the Leeson 1 year warranty. Good news I think.
Said he expects some definite prices latter today.

Jake, you want to be careful with 415V 3phase, given what can happen with plain old 240V 1 phase.
