Thanks BenRegards Ben

Not at all Ben, I didn't know what they were until a few months ago (or we're both stupid).
They are for opening up the mouths etc of wooden planes, so they have to be quite thin sometimes. There are some available from Leigh Neilsen in Tool Steel, but for some reason they are not delivered sharp (deliberately).

Floats do not have to be thin. Some are as thick as the standard Bahco curved tooth pansar file which are usually used on in metal bodybuilding. They work quite well even in hardwoods but having a curved tooth they cannot be sharpened even with a diamond file. Floats that are used for making or adjusting planes are called plane makers floats but they can also be used for regular joinery (sometimes called joinery floats) although I could not imagine using those shown in this thread for this. Floats are sort of cross between a rasps and plane and can be used in the same way as either in opening up any wooden joint structure. The ones also shown in this thread are only one example, eg there are those that cut on the pull and those that cut on the push and their width and length vary considerably. The Lie-Nielsen site shows some examples but if you want to see some close up pictures of a set I made a few years back, try here.

Re group buy
I will have an interest in the Harold and Saxon. Will he commit to a firm delivery date once he has details of the numbers in the buy?

Excellent to see you up and running on this already. In principle I am interested in a Jointer plane and a large float plane from Terry Gordon: Also a mortice chisel (probably 1/2" , and when I find the catalogue I boasted to you about I will be able to verify that) and a chisel roll from H & S.
I'll look forward to hearing further details (nearly said "firmer" details, but that would have been confusing) in the future.

That is definitely where I'm aiming Mick and actually I don't see it as a problem after discussing it with Trent. Having said that, we always have to be patient when there are third party factors involved (e.g. he may use some one to do the cryo treatment, just as Liogier uses a third party for the coating). Indeed, in an email from Trent last night, he said he is already doing some preparatory work - and he only became aware of the GB about 3 days ago! I'd never spoken to him (ever) before Wednesday.

I'm in for a tail vice and possibly some planes from HNT. I'll confirm the planes next week.

HNT Gordon planes
Bugger! I have a couple of Terry's planes and a spokeshave (all gorgeous) - the only one I really want/need/want right now is the 1/4" Dado plane! ANY chance it may get included into the group buy?
Shine on you crazy diamond!
