How often does that happen with joyriders and what would they contaminate the fuel with?

They wouldn't have much success trying that in a FWD car but, despite being powerful for its age and engine size, it's still not capable of spinning Pilot Sport 3 tyres for more than a couple of seconds even with a hard launch.
I'm honestly not that worried about the fuel being spiked, it seems a pretty unlikely scenario

An interesting thing this sugar. I always assumed it was BS.... and it turns out to be untrue.
Sugar simply doesn't dissolve in fuel and the fuel filter captures it easily.
I was keen to see whether the facts are true and Mythbusters did a thing on it!

Many moons ago a particularly silly fellow who didn't like me much put sugar in my petrol tank and the result was that the car simply wouldn't start. On investigation the sugar had settled at the bottom of the fuel tank and blocked the fuel line. It took all of about thirty minutes to remove the tank and flush it and the fuel lines, and about another thirty to reinstall it and pop rivet a sliding bolt to the underside of the lid covering the filler cap. Humber Vogue starts up and runs good as gold and never shows any subsequent effects related to the attempted sabotage. Just my own limited experience with sugar and petrol, make of it what you will.

The deliberate fuel line clogging bastardy certainly makes sense.
This would certainly give most people the impression of a "stuffed engine".... it runs a bit then conks out.
Underlying truth of the myth?

It's not a matter of it blowing the engine. I'm not saying that. It is just an on going problem that keeps bunging up the works at the most inconvenient times and without any warning. The normal scenario is: you go over a bump, or take a sharp corner, sugar in the tank gets stired up and clogs any opening it comes in contact with. If added to the carbi (after the filter) it really is a bitch. Nobody wants to have to pull a carbi to bits in the middle of nowhere with only their imagination for illumination.
