Brett
From a couple of group buys that I organised last year, the import threshold of $1000, above which import duty and GST kicks in (which then includes postage cost), is one of the more challenging aspects of these exercises. At least the A$ has settled down a bit and not jumping about like it was when those group buys went through.
The trick is to break the parcels into sub $1000 amounts (on the day the order is made and paid for) and have these sent to nominated group members strategically located around the country for redistribution. It's quite a value/weight/location parceling exercise that can exercise the mind...
In my case I asked for the estimated cost of the goods and share of international postage up front based on the currency conversion at the time and a second payment for redistribution postage, plus any difference on the actual currency conversion on the day of purchase (plus the fee for the currency conversion which can be up to 4%) before final redistribution to group participants. A spreadsheet was invaluable.
Apologies if I'm giving you tips on how to suck eggs...Stay sharp and stay safe!

Ubeaut Neil, thanks for that. I was already on top of the sub-grand bit, but your other info is very helpful. Spreadsheets are my speshilty, and I may even write a little bit of VB code to plan it for me.
However, I just had a thought: most of the intentions expressed so far are for around $300, so I would think we'll be able to get them posted direct to each member and solve most, if not all, of those challenges. That will also save on additional domestic freight charges.
Furthermore it would help where a couple of members' things aren't in stock, and this would not hold up delivery for the rest.
Another member who does some importing professionally has sent me a PM with a few tips.
Regards, Brett
