In an effort to find information on saw files I contacted FenceFurniture (forum member) who was involved in a trial of sawfiles a couple of years ago.
He sent me a large PDF file of results. The long and short of it is that there is no "one size fits all" solution and good sawfiles are hard to come by these days.
The good news is that Bahco files have proven to be the file of choice for saws over 12 PPI. Bahco have stockists all over the place (just google it) so we should be able to organize something through them either individually or collectively given the lead time available.
For teeth 15ppi and finer Glardon (Vallorbe) Needle Files are apparently the go. Vallorbe #4 can be obtained from Aust Jewelry Supplies. See "VALLORBE THREE SQUARE NEEDLE FILE": http://jewellerssupplies.com.au/need...mm-p-1151.html
Thanks to FenceFurniture for the above information. (He has no financial interest in these suppliers and nor do I)
I hope this is of assistance
Cheers

The two Bahco files used in the testing mentioned above were:
Bahco Portuguese made 6" Extra Slim (for 7 - 11 PPI) and
Bahco Portuguese made 6" Slim (for 4 - 6.5 PPI)
The PDF of the test results mentioned above for the saw file testing is 27 pages long. I am trying to sort out the relevant bits.
Is anyone looking at sharpening anything less than 12 PPI on the workshop weekend? I do not want to clutter up the thread with info nobody wants, so if anyone wants the info on the recommendations for the finer saws let me know.
Cheers

Guys, dont rush out and buy the bahco files just yet.
I have just been advised there is more involved in it to make sure you get the right file.
When I have the full information I will pass it on, but it looks like most bahco stockists would have to order it in special so its just as well we have a couple of months lead time.
Just repeating - don't go out and buy a bahco file off the shelf until we get the exact one identified.

This website may be of interest, as it explains a bit about sawfiles.

I’ve been away for a bit so missed the comings and goings. I don’t have a saw vice, I have in the past used two pieces of timber about the length of the saw clamped together using G clamps, this lot was either stuck into my B&D dual height Workmate, or, the last time I sharpened and set a saw, this combination was held in my wood vice on my bench. I ran a third G clamp in the centre of the saw and moved it as I came along the teeth, this seemed to work reasonably well.
I may now look around to see what is available and try and build a wooden saw vice that can be operated in my B&D Workmate; need portability here. I have at least one saw set, possibly another somewhere that belonged to my grandfather in the fifties. I’ll bring along whatever I have and/or can find.
As for files, well I have used all sorts of things, including one small file set I picked up in Aldi in Germany that worked surprisingly well on one of my 7 point saws, but they are about 8-10 years old and have sort of been around the traps; I need some files.
With regard to what saws I wish to sharpen, I have a 3 PPI rip saw which was rescued some years ago at a garage sale, it works reasonably well and quite accurate for ripping, but I would like to really get it going as well as can be expected.
I have a couple of other saws I would be interested in working on, one is an 8 PPI, the other is 7 PPI and is my favourite go to saw, everything is perfect with this saw, it is just heaven to use. I do have a few others (about twenty give or take) but these three are the ones I use for all sorts of jobs.
I sort of see the workshop being more of a getting to understand the correct methods and styles of actually sharpening and setting, rather than a, “I must sharpen squillions of saws this weekend” approach. If I can grasp a methodical way of sharpening and setting that is better than what I already am able to sporadically do, I will be very satisfied. Anything above and beyond that, will be a big bonus.
Mick.

Bahco Portuguese made 6" Extra Slim (for 7 - 11 PPI) is identified as 4-187-06-2-0
Bahco Portuguese made 6" Slim (for 4 - 6.5 PPI) is identified as 4-186-06-2-0
We can probably order these in through a Bahco distributor, which are plentiful but the files would be in packs of 10 and it is after hours now so I cannot phone around until tomorrow (happy to do this research for the workshop ) so no prices available as yet.
I just want to make it clear here that not everyone may want this sized file. It is your responsibility to determine what size file you need for the saw(s) that you want to work on. Other members can help and advise before you purchase but the final decision will be yours. Basically don't come crying to me if you buy one of the files I have mentioned and it proves not to be suitable for what you want.
I have mentioned these files because they were the ones that performed well in the trial for 4 to 12 PPI saws. Tooth geometry can vary greatly depending on the brand, purpose and other factors from saw to saw. As i said earlier I have access to more information on other sizes but I am keeping the range pretty narrow right now so as not to clutter the thread until we find out what additional sizes people are interested in.
If you are sure you would like the 4-186-06-2-0 files above, search that product number in ebay and go to the entry from the Bigredtoolboxaustralia store. Store is UK based but I suspect the products are already located in Australia. Free postage and a $10 discount if you order three or more files, Total comes to AU$35.67 delivered to your door - less than $12 per file. BTW if you order 6 files you still only get $10 discount, so order in 3's.
I will make some further inquiries on these files and a couple more that I have been told are performing well. I will report back as i get some information.
Cheers

Get your hand saws sharpened for free
I've been trying to keep up with this,
But running a business can be a real time killer.
So if you guys don't hear from me ,it's just I'm busy else were.
Ok so firstly Ian ,and I are becoming email buddy's quite quickly.
Files ,I'm personally just going to wait a bit ,and see what's suggested as we get further along here.
But I'm reading as much as I can lol.
It's been suggested to me ,about group buys.
I personally will not be organising any thing like that.
If it happens amongst your selfs that's great
If there's a huge ,huge bargain I'm sure someone will let me know.
But as stated I'm not organising any thing like that.
The other thing to mention ,and I think some have all ready talked of this.
My intention ,and I don't want to own this, its for everyone to make it a weekend not just me.
For was us to learn the skills and principals behind sharping a saw.
Not a (I'm bringing a dozen saws and not going till there all done thing).
That's called a Working bee lol.
Also Ian and I, and we have only briefly discussed this in email, will give a little demonstration on properly the Sunday.
Of making a back saw mainly regarding the handle.
For those that are interested as well.
Don't forget we need saw vices and saw sets as well.
Not just files
I only have one saw vice for myself.
Tho ,I've got four saw sets so if you turn up with out one.
We should be able to cover you.
And one last thing, Ian has said he's not really interested due to his eye site trying to sharpen your tiny 50 teeth an inch gents saw or even giving a demonstration on it.
And I can complete understand that.
Also I'm not gifted with the touch of the keyboard like the rest of you.
So if I sound lam or boring, I apologise soon maybe.
Or you can chat with me about it on Sunday morning before I've had my morning coffee [emoji41] lol
Also some of you have sent me PM
with help and suggestions,
Thank you they have been great.
Cheers Matt
