Default Help Preserve Our Sporting Heritage

During the course of a pleasurable few hours yesterday in the company of a few sportsman endowed with far greater prowess than I, conversation inevitably was drawn to great sportsmen of past eras.

In the course of this, one of our number let slip that he was a personal friend of the son of a fine athlete who had won five national titles in PILLOW FIGHTING.

Now the younger folk in our midst had never seen a fair dinkum PILLOW FIGHT (their experience being limited to girly Baby-Sitters Club movies), and this led to the conclusion that part of our rich sporting heritage was in danger of being lost.

PILLOW FIGHTING is an explosively physical sport, (not to be confused with another activity of a similar name seen late at night on SBS).

As a consequence of this discussion, a very informal approach has already been made to a member of the Australian Surf Life Saving Associaton Board of Surf Sports to reintroduce PILLOW FIGHTING as a national event.

I am sure that the true sporting afficionados among us will feel as strongly as I, and get behind this campaign by writing to the National Association, (or even the Prime Minister).

Let's just hope we can get enough momentum happening before the woodchippers get all the slippery poles.

    Cheers,

P (fighting the good fight to preserve our Nation's Sporting Culture)

but hey, in the interests of preserving this great sport, let's not allow ourselves to wander off thread....(that is an absolute no no on internet BB's I've heard).

    Cheers,

Originally, underarm bowling was the only method employed. Later, an English woman, who was playing cricket alongside the gentlemen attired in the dress of the day for a lady (a long, widely blousing dress) was having difficulty in bowling with an underarm action due to the blousing dress and to counter this she began to bowl with an overarm delivery method. Soon after, a gentleman who had witnessed this action, began to employ it in club cricket matches. However, the overarm method was quickly banned and determined to be illegal.

It was not until many years later the overarm bowling method was finally accepted by cricketing authorities and grew rapidly in popularity amongst all players. By the 20th century, underarm bowling had disappeared from the game and bowling underarm was considered both weak and unsporting, almost tantamount to cheating.

Who can possibly say that cricket isn't interesting?
