Information spreadsheets

Hi All

I have attached a couple of spreadsheets that I started working on a couple of months ago. They are far from complete, but I thought I might put them up now to see what the feedback is.

The first is designed as an information receptacle. There are a multitude of links and so on scattered throughout the forum, and I thought it might be a good idea to have as much info as possible in one place, that can also be downloaded to the member's computer for easy reference (and customisation if desired). I would be looking for anyone and everyone to contribute to the sheet (via a separate data entry sheet that I will create). It can then be uploaded into the forum library, and updated as required.

The second sheet is basically a router bits comparison of the premium brands (hence my post a few weeks ago on what router bits do we like). There are some brands to add to this such as Jesada, Katana, Onsrud, Infinity, Timberline, Wealdon and maybe one or two others. The idea is "I want a bit....which brand has what I want, and if more than one brand available, what's the price comparison".

Both of the sheets are still a bit raw, and have to be sexed up a bit with some filtering macros and so on, but in the mean time, what do yo-all think? Good idea or waste of effort? Would you use it? Would you contribute to them?

I'll attach a poll to make it a bit easier, but please feel free to comment. Any Excel heads out there: suggestions on the sheet itself welcome.

take care with your fonts, try and use standard ones like Arial -- on my PC one of your fonts is translated into symbols

I'm not sure about the Macros.
many people's security setttings may preclude their use.

Good on you Ian, thanks for that. I just opened them both on this here PITA Mac and all the fonts were OK (thinking that if there's a font problem, a Mac will certainly show it up), and all was ok. I'd be willing to bet that the font in question is in the "SUPPLIERS" sheet, the blue heading rows 3, 9, 11 etc. Is that right?

That particular font is "Agate" , a very nice font that I downloaded a couple of years ago. I completely forgot that other machines are unlikely to have it. Furthermore I forgot to hide column "D" which has buttons for "Admin" only (read me!). The Mac just converted it to another readable font.

If can confirm the cells with the font problem I'll fix it, hide "D" and reload. This is exactly why I asked for feedback.

I can also include an instruction panel re macros (user can decide). With the exception of the "SEARCH" function they are all "goto" macros, so no big deal if the user doesn't want them.

The fonts showed up fine on my machines. I have office, open office, and libre office on a linux machine as well. The macros are no big deal, they are disabled be default on my software, but when enabled, they worked as I thought they should.

I'm running a graphics program that has installed about 100+ additional fonts

In the Router Bits.xls, the font you've used for the type titles e.g RAIL & STILE (in Cell H657) is substituted with Delongba Engraved, a symbol font
cute, but not very useful

I'm confused now Ian. It's supposed to be Delongba Engraved, but it looks fine on my machine (i.e. not symbols). Moreover, I thought DE was a standard font. No?

If you are like me, you then spend ages removing the foreign language fonts which are useless!!!

Sorry Ian, but I'm none the wiser for the screen shot. I know you are getting symbols but what does it say in the Font window? Mine says Delongba Engraved, and the font shows up as an engraved font, and quite legible, no symbols. The result that you get suggests (to me anyway) that the font has been substituted with another that is symbols because DE isn't on your machine. When I open it on this Mac, it still says DE is the font name, but the font actually looks more like Arial or similar (still readable).

With that in mind, what do you get in the suppliers sheet in the blue heading rows (where the font is Agate)? I've changed that one to Georgia.

G'day Brett,

I get the same result as Ian with the router bits sheet. The font listed is Delongba Engraved but the cell just shows the symbols. The font that it's reverted to is Wingdings.

The suppliers sheet shows the blue labels font as Agate and this displays normally.

I must have downloaded Delongba. Bugger, it's a really nice font. Oh well, back to Georgia Italic. Thanks Steve
