Thread: Melbourne based get togethers

We all have our personal priorities. going to the GTG has to take its own place within those priorities as many of the respondents are rightly saying. Mention has been made of competition from regional woodworking clubs, also a valid point.
Personally. I like what these GTG's are about as it is not just turners or boxmakers or furniture makers talking about their own cloistered interests. It has been about EVERY ASPECT that someone wants to bring up. I have only been able to attend a few of these GTG's myself due to various competing priorities but I have returned home richer in some way from every one I have attended.
As usual, if I can make it on Monday I will be there. If I do not make it, thats because a competing priority won and I will not be disappointed if you start without me.
I would like to put it out there that maybe it is the format of the meeting in an RSL and on a weeknight might not br the best alternative for a lot of people who may well be interested in GTG's. Having said that, no matter what format is suggested some will like it and some will not.
But if the current format was suitable for enough people then we probably would not be having this conversation.
What would people think about a couple of shed visits to different members places on a weekend, either with or without a bbq option? Along with visits to professional woodworking shops on other months? Visits to woodworking retail outlets with demos and a pre-negotiated discount, provided we bring enough members?
What bout a combination of the above, made into monthly events? A bit of variety? Chuck in a dinner or two just for social purposes if you want.
Any other ideas?
Cheers

Ripper idea on having a bbq at meets houses Doug (once the warmer nights/lighter evenings kick in). That would mean that the gtg would move around the state a little so hopefully others could attend where distance may have been an issue. It also would help (as you mentioned) expose people to different types of woodworking. Not to mention possible give people ideas in their own shed setups and space saving ideas!

Have responded before but will again - don't want to be an anonymous 'view'! I am subscribed to this thread, and follow with interest. I will not be making it as long as it a Monday, and am not mad about getting to Box Hill either. I remain interested though, if only in theory at present.

I am also interested but not thrilled about Box Hill, maybe find out where the interested people are located? Although I think people would be spread far and wide, the idea of moving it around is a good one.

Since there have been some positive responses about my suggestion of shed visits/BBQ/different locations, and not being the kind of person who suggests things he is not prepared to do himself. I put it up for discussion that I am prepared to host a shed visit/BBQ at my shed sometime in October.
The weather should be nice and warm and daylight saving will have kicked in. I have a large undercover area complete with BBQ so a little rain would not even put a damper on it. My shed is at Hoppers Crossing.
Leaving the precise date open for now, we could have a BBQ for Saturday evening or for Sunday lunch depending on when is suitable for the majority of prospective attendees.
Who would be interested?
Cheers

Hand up for this one Doug!! Great start to host one western suburbs based so folks your side wouldn't have to cross the bridge to attend (i.e. box hill)
I too would be happy to host a meeting also. My shed would only fit 2 or 3 people at any one time but plenty of room on the deck for tall tales. Happy to do any month as long as I have some notice to word up the wife (and child). Langwarrin is my location so a touch closer than box hill for all the peninsula and S.E. forumites.
It would give me a great excuse to clean up a little too
Thanks for taking the bull by the horns Doug."All the gear and no idea"

I don't go over the bridge to get to Box Hill from my place, much better down through Flemington and Parkville.
That would be a good start to diversifying the location. I would travel to Langwarrin for a shed tour and some tall tales.
I am in the middle of a reorganization and cleanup right now and this will be an incentive to maintain the momentum. I want to get more done on the workbench project too.
no problems
Cheers

Hope to see many there.
