    Default NSW Fires

To anyone currently affected by the fires in NSW, stay safe and leave early if your house or property is likely to be in danger.

To all the firies, police and other emergency services personnel, as usual your contributions will be immeasurable. Hope you all make it back to your families unscathed.

    Craig.

All good here in Katoomba, but it was a bit spooky getting an SMS from the RFS saying "only travel if essential". There has been a stack of sirens around here all day.

I was down at Skew's place yesterday - at the top of a quite steep hill which is completely forested - timber house - very scary. He says they have two bags permanently packed and that he cleans out the guttering every couple of months. We've had no rain to speak of for at least three months. Doubt that there'll be any snow this Spring (4" on October 12th last year).

I saw what can happen on a steep hill at Como in the 94 fires where a number of people died. The fire jumped a 300-400 metre wide river to then rage up the hill in a matter of moments......

    Default Bushfires

I add our deepest sympathies to all those affected and we are so early into the season. Dreadful.
Whatever we can do as individuals, no matter how small will be appreciated. God bless them all. Drillit.

Default Hoping all forum members, family & friends are safe!!

Hoping all forum members, family & friends are safe!!
The fires in Springwood are 6-8kms to the east of us at Faulconbridge yesterday BUT today they are only 1-2kms away, so we are safe.
Yesterday we had the westerly winds keep the smoke away from us but today with last nights southerly we have lots of smoke effecting my sinus.
Having to watch for embers flying over; the gutters haven't been cleaned in years [my fault I should have paid someone to do it].
We suspect and know of people who live in the Winmalee streets were houses have been lost.
People aren't being allowed to return to those streets until the authorities have done a search of the damaged/destroyed buildings/homes.
There will be a huge rally of local community once things settle down with the fires out.
THANK YOU for prayers and support.
    Cheers, crowie

PS - we really need rain and buckets of it......

Glad to hear you are ok Crowie hope all in the area's effected by fires are safe, can you block you're downpipes and fill you're gutters with water. Hopefully there will soon be a change in the weather to help the situation and give some relief to the firefighters.
    Regards Rod.

I'm in the Blue Mountains in a house that is surrounded by bushland. While we've taken every precaution we know of, and we're insured to the max, it's still a nervous time when there are fires about. People say that "they're only things - they can be replaced", and that's generally true. But what about my stockpile of timbers carefully hoarded over the past few years? All that cedar, walnut, huon, maple, blackwood, rosewood and other assorted things? The tools and house are easily replaced. The timber would be a sad loss. Not sure how the insurance company would see it. New for old? Here's some treated pine logs, to replace your lost timber, or a Bunnings voucher to get yourself some more. Not quite the same thing!

Sunday looks like it will be another bad day. So early in the season too.

    cheers,

    ajw

I voice my sentiments as well. These fires have come up quite quickly.
