    Admins

-- query the DB for a list of off-site image URLs'. I see you are using a htaccess redirect. This is trivial
-- write a script (php, perl, python) to WGET all those URLs images (IF you are caching them, which you SHOULD be, then you will have them already)
-- dump the files into a local directory
-- when the image is returned/captured, query-update the DB to reflect the new image location to local
-- If you are rate-limited or knocked off for anti-harvesting, run the script 100 at a time, every 5 minutes, over a period of.... whatever

Seriously, perhaps an hours work to make it perfect. I'm pretty amazed nobody has done this yet for vBulletin. Had a look around last night but all I see is moaning rather than action.

-- If space/size is an issue, just dump them into an elastic cloud storage. Its dirt cheap
-- Naturally, back up the images directory to a local offline storage via a nightly trickle charge (rsync)
-- A local trickle backup would alleviate every disaster the forum has suffered... not a fast recover, but dirt cheap

This is so easy its almost boring me already.

This would instantly solve DaveTTCs concerns.

Act now before Photobucket goes down a black hole. I give it a week before it implodes.

Windows "Picture Manager" will give you a 640 x 480 'internet large' image size with a single click.
Cropping, contrast and brightness are my decisions and they are just as simple to apply.

I have checked nearly all his threads back to when he joined in 2013 and haven't been able to find any photos linked to Photobucket.
    I found some in these:
One for Replonics (post #2, #4, #5, #8, etc because they are quoted too)
    Golden Hind Blueprints. (post #1)
    Scamander (post #94)
    Time To Go! (post #1)
2/3 scale Indian Straight Four. (post #948)

Or at least that is where they are getting the images from when I view them (Firefox, right click then "View Image Info"), and the URLs shown in the post history page.

I don't know what extra tools moderators and admins have, but like woodPixel said, it's not a hard problem for somebody with DB access and scripting ability to search for and grab them.
Definitely the most reliable way. Especially since the links get copied into other peoples posts when people reply with quotes.

Yes, I seem to have missed quite a few! Up to post #704 - 15/8/2014 in the 2/3 Indian thread he was uploading photos to the forum, he then used links to Photobucket to post #1441- 23/11/2015 when he reverted to uploading to the forum.

There are heaps of photos in between that are linked to Photobucket and I expect the same will apply to his other threads.

One thing that really stands out when going through that thread is the number of repeated photos in people quoting his posts, there may be 6 words under the quote but up to 8-10 quoted photos which are a repeat of the photos directly above it!

In the Scamander thread all photos up to 20/11/15 are linked to Photobucket.

I am in the process of copying my Photobucket images to Postimage. It is not too difficult, and it gives me a chance to choose those that I really want to keep.

So far, all my images on Photobucket are still on all the forums I post to. I use Photobucket as I can (a) post to several forums, and (b) do so from anywhere in the world when on holiday. My account is a $59 p.a. one, and the only link I have lost (so far?) is the direct link. Interestingly, this is the one I rarely use. The one I do use is the IMG, which allows one to link a photo that displays ....

    Let's see if this disappears.

    Regards from Perth

Hi Derek, can you give a little tutorial on how you are transferring the photos from FB to the Postimage site.

There are two ways to obtain photos from Photobucket. The first is still available to me, but may not be available to others: in the boxes to the right of the photo, click on the IMG link, and paste this to the forum. That is all one needed to do in the past, and it still works for me on my MacBook Pro.

It also still works on my iPad. Touch the box. This automatically brings up the keyboard. Touch the box again and select "select all" and "copy". You can then paste the link as before.

The other way is to right-click on the photo. Click on "open image in New Tab". The new tab will contain the direct link:

    http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...psaq31d70t.jpg

Readers can click on this to see the picture. Or you can add the IMG and /IMG in [] to the beginning and end to make it visible on the forum.

What I am saying is that the photos I have, being in a paid account (albeit the lowest of the paid accounts) still appears to be working - minus the direct link (which is easy to create).

Yes Derek, I have always used the img method, which then displays the linked photo in the post here. By the look of it all my links to Photobucket still display the photo here, and I only have a free account.

I have today gone through some of repliconics threads where he used Photobucket img links for some time and there are no missing photos there either.

So I am not sure what Photobucket is getting at, either they haven't explained themselves very well, resulting in very bad PR for them, or the photos still have ti disappear.

It's all very well saying move them here, and all the other tecky bits and bobs, but I for one would have no idea fof how to do that. At the moment I am playing around with getting photos on to flickr. How to post or send them after that is still a mistry?

It is not just 3rd whatevers that are efected either. I have tried sending several photobucket links of my photos to myself ad when they come back in to my In box and I click on the link the page comes up with

"Sorry, the requested page does not exist.
Please check the URL for correct spelling and capitalization."

I hadn't realised that sending stuff to myself was '3rd party hosting"?

So as far as I am concerned they can go to hell! I have the originals on both of our Macs and several times backed up on external HDDs, but to go through all the merde (that's French for pony poo, or similar) of downloading hundreds of photos to anywhere. We are just starting the snowball rolling on a house move and I have better things to spend my time on.
My ambition is to grow old disgracefully. So far my ywife recons that I'm doing quite well! John.

99% of the photo's I put on here are downloaded from my computer with the odd one being from Photobucket. I do keep all of my photo's on an external hard drive so if by chance anyone sees a photo missing if I am told I can replace it. i am one who does not mess about reducing the size of my photo's as I need them of a high quality to send to the woodworker magazine when I write an article and they need them like that.
The main reason for using PB for me was so that I could post pictures on some forums that will not allow direct downloads, I have so many things that I want to do so will not be using any other photo hosting site so those that want it will simply not get any photo's from me. I like the way it runs here so you are stuck with me

The reasons for reducing large photo sizes is:

    1. Reduce the storage size of the photo collection on the hosting site - what ever that may be - IE My own or something like Photobucket etc.

    2. Reduces the loading time for Forum Web pages that load with linked off site photos.

I keep large HI-Def photos on a local drive and keep the resized versions in a folder labelled Small, these are uploaded to the server for linking, I only post larger pictures on an as needed basis.

    that's basically what I do.

The images directory structure on my HD looks like this

    1. Year X
    1.1 Originals
    1.1.1 Topic
    1.1.1.1 Sub-topic 1
    1.1.1.2 Sub-topic 2
    .
    .
    1.1.2 Topic

    1.1.2.2 Sub-topic 2

    1.2.1 Topic
    1.2.1.1 Sub-topic 1
    1.2.1.2 Sub-topic 2

    1.2.2 Topic

    1.2.2.2 Sub-topic 2
    .
    .

    2. Year Y
    .
    .

The topics are more or less the same every year e.g. Family, WW, MW, Electrical/Electronics, Products. Sub topics are usually projects of some kind or other.

I have a good memory for when certain things happen so I can usually find files very quickly.
Laster year a former colleague contacted me hoping I might have a copy of a report of a project we did back in 1994! - I chucked out 99.9% of my work related papers when I retired,
But I was able to find an electronic copy of the project on my HD.
