G'day
Yes there certainly is a shortage of info on this topic. I built a pool table a couple of years ago and it took a great deal of research and some help from a friend who builds and restores pool tables. One thing I learned is that american tables and english/australian tables have quite a few differences.
Cheers

Hi Rod:
Thanks for writing. I would appreciate if you would cite a few major differences for pool tables only since snooker and billiards tables are quite different roos.
I was thinking maybe English/Australian pool tables may not use K66 profile cushions which would definitely affect the sub rail profile?
Let me know your thoughts. And please send me a pix of your dream pool table.
Regards,
Brian

G'day Brian
To be honest I can't exactly remember the differences, but I'm pretty sure the shape of the cushions (approach to pockets) was different, the size of the opening and the cloth. Not major differences but something to account for if working from your book.
My table is hardly a dream one. In fact it ordinary but adequate for the purpose I built it.
I had been casually researching the project for about a year with minimal success when 2 weeks before christmas SWMBO said, "are you gunna make this pool table for the kids of not?" Well, that got me into gear. I used all timber components that I had on hand, recyled oregon legs, recycled baltic pine for the rest. For the top I used 32 mm mdf. I made sure that it was very well supported with dead straight rails (about 6 over 2.1 metre table(7ft)).
I used best quality english cloth and quality cushions etc.
I spend some time shiming to get it to play straight. Surpisingly it plays truer than a mates slate table which he paid a small fortune for.
Later on I had to remove the cushions and reshape them a little as I made the pockets a little too tight. My mate that recovers them refixed the cushion cloth as I hadn't done a real good job of that.
I haven't got a photo (or digital camera) unfortunately but I'll see what I can do. Like I say though its no masterpiece, but its not bad.
Cheers
Rod

Hi There Rod, Im Currently Building My Own Table And I Need To Know The Radius For The Pocket Cut Outs In The Slate. I Would Also Love To Get Hold Of A Side Rail Profil. (not American) If You Can Help It Would Be Great. I AM ACTUALLY USEING COMPRESSED FIBRO FOR THE BASE. SO FAR EVERY THING IS SPOT ON BUT I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KNOW WHAT SHIMMING IS, MY PLAY SURFACE IS UNBELIEVABLY DEAD FLAT. BUT AS I AM GOING TO BE MAKING MORE TABLES I WANT TO BE EDUCATED IN ALL ASPECTS.

5 posts in 6 years Brian.
Not really that swift are you.
I wouldn't be hanging around for as reply guys.......If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

building your own pool billiard table
Hi guys!
i wonder why people want to pay money for a pool table plan, if there are really (!) great and free pool table building plans out there. i am thinking about building one soon and i have found after a long time of research this really great construction plan from a german guy, translated into english:
http://build-a-pool-billiard-table.umuluku.com
although the domain name "umuluku" sounds funny, the plan is really serious. the guy planned it with CAD and even made pretty good 3d rendering simulations of the table. also a lot of technical drawings show the details.
i believe this one works, since the quality of the plan is just great. and it's free! if there is anyone out there who might think about building one of this too, let me know! we may exchange some useful informations and help eachother
greets
Larry
