Rambutso Island Project with Richard Vaughan
Hi Woodies
Some of you may be aware of Richards Vaughan's work helping the Rambutso Island communities in Papua New Guinea. With the help of Aussie Woodies Richard is collecting hand tools for the islanders to use. Richard has made one trip to the island where he taught elementary woodworking skills so the community can, not only better their own way of life but also produce goods for sale. He is planning a second visit shortly.
Of equally pressing importance is the sanitation (or lack thereof) on the island, to this end a crowd funding program has been launched to buy some composting toilets for the island, currently they are less than 10% of the way to the $16,000 target if you can help out have a look HERE
210916.JPG CLOSED we missed the mark, but every little bit helps. Thanks to all who contributed

On the hand tool front, Richards main need is carving tools in good working order, if you have any and can get them to Brisbane in the next week (so they can be packed in time for shipping to the island) please send them to: 7/16 Spine Street, Sumner Park, Queensland, 4074.
Please help out with this cause if you can?
Regards
Grahame

Hi Grahame,
There appears to be a few efforts of this kind, below are suggestions I recently made (I don't own carving stuff!).
"The Aust Blacksmiths Assoc (Victoria) did this aricle about a related idea, co-ordinated by a Peter Drofenik, teaching the PNG-ers core blacksmithing skills. See on page 6;
http://www.abavic.org.au/userfiles/d...%20edition.pdf
A book I would strongly recommend for background to such training is;
https://books.google.com.au/books/ab...ir_esc=y&hl=en
" and
"Also there are lesson guides especially adapted to 'intermediate technology' people;
https://books.google.com.au/books?id...GHB7cQ6AEIHTAA
and
https://books.google.com.au/books?id...GHB7cQ6AEIKDAC
The idea being that the locals will be self sufficient and sustainable.
Hope this helps,"

Hi Woodies
Thanks to all those who have donated tools Richard and his volunteers are beavering away preparing them for shipping. Now that part of the project is complete, the financial side is in poor shape with only $3,182 raised from the $16,000 target, if you can help donations as small as $5.00 can be processed.
Regards
Grahame

Good job posting the link to their campaign to raise funds for fixing up the islands sanitation problems.
I have just posted off a few spokeshave blades Richard was missing.
These were donated by TTTG, I also sent up some augers that should fit the old hand cranked drill press I scored on here a few months back.
Richard and Des were doing the final sharpening and packing when I spoke to him the other night.
I spent a week with Richard last month helping get the tools in order.
Had a visit with a lot of woodies on the trip up and back from Sydney.
