Default Server upgrde not quite finished yet

This weekend we will be moving Woodwork Forums to a massive new solid state server.

This may result in the forums being off line for a couple to a few hours whilst the transfer is done it may also slow the forums down whilst full backups are done.
Hopefully there will be no major glitches.

The move will result in much faster response times on the forums and all members should notice an appreciable speed difference almost immediately.

We don't have any idea what time this will happen as yet but will try to do it when usage is low.

    Cheers - Neil

Ahhhh, those lovely words from the IT gurus "a seamless transition - no-one will notice!"
    Good luck.

Last time the seamless transition took a day and a half instead of a couple of hours hence the crossed fingers.

Default was it running on coal and vacuum tubes previously?

You'll have to fire the coal shoveller and the guy who winds in new vacuum tubes.

Thanks Mr Dictator and all involved for advanced notice and all the effort (and expense) you go to to keep the #1 woodwork forum on Earth. Had me worried for a few seconds with the WARNING - WARNING!!! Forum Closure heading.

    Default Forum closure

Good god ..... This may result in forum members having to go out to the shed on the weekend and get some work done. I hope the fancy new solid state server will be able to handle the avalanche of WIP's and completed project photos that ate sure to arrive on Monday morning.

Can I recommend that the old server be donated to Steamwhisperer?

Thanks for the heads up; I too became somewhat alarmed at the thread title

It's only a small change and nothing will go wrong

Have you run it in parallel?

    No, we don't have to

    Three days later

Why did you not test it first?

We didn't think it would cause any problems

I hope all goes well and we all appreciate the effort that goes into this place to keep it going. I always dreaded when system changes were implemented.

Header changed from "Forum Closure" to "Server upgrade" because it appeared to be affecting search results on google.

Sheesh..... That just took all the fun out of it, eh.

Bugger.... Looks like it's all off for this weekend due to a stuff-up with the new server.

    Maybe later in the week.

To err is human but to really screw it up you need a computer and a server will do an even better job.
