Right, that's better.
Noo then! I think I would be right in thinking that a spider(s) would not find the entrance to the vac wand (for floor attachments) a particularly good place to reside in the face of air and floor waste regularly passing them at many kilometres per hour. So this would indicate that the device was perhaps not often used...... until today. Corraborating evidence was that the floor itself appeared not to seen the action of the floor brush running over it for, ah.....some time.
Further corroborating evidence was that it took the two of us fully an hour and a half looking for the broom (on and off) before it revealed itself. Fletty swears that he used it yesterday.......but there was no evidence of that either......
There is now a pair of ear muffs hanging off the drop saw, and I'm assured that they will be used from now on. We can't have fletty becoming a member of the "Eh? Wassat?" club.
We had a really good time together sorting out a few things for Sunday, throwing a few ideas around for longer term shed plans, doing some tests on the DE system. As we approached the end it became apparent that we had a bit of time to spare and of course Picton is just 15 mins or so away to the south. For those who don't know, it is there that resides the George IV pub (a lovely old sandstone jobbie), but more important than the sandstone is the fact that they brew their own beer - Burragorang Bock - and it has been far too many years since I've had its pleasure.
So, job done, it just made too much sense to go down to Picton for lunch, and off we went. The Bock is every bit as good as I remember it - just a pity they no longer have it in take-aways.

What? Nobody up for it? Am I to claim the Gold podium by default? You just can't let that happen can you?
To be a little clearer on the rules:
If the challenger wishes to freehand sharpen then my time in setting up a jig is not included - even though we'll both be working on a hollow ground bevel, I have nil experience at freehand and so have to use a jig at this stage. This is a comparison of FAGCIB + paste verses Waterstones, and so nothing to do with the time saved by freehanding which can be common to both.

It's a well known 'fact' that brooms can be remarkably elusive AND it is a further well known 'fact' that that Camden spiders are remarkably fast at spinning webs ....... even in strong winds !
I commented in the parallel 'fletty's shed' thread, that the stored "mahjong table and 4 matching chairs" reappeared after the shed rebuild as a mahjong table and only 3 chairs. To make a 4th chair to complete the set requires a degree of carving skill that l just don't have! This low sunlight pic taken today while Brett gave me a few minutes off from searching for the broom, shows the level of skill required......

Im still searching for the missing chair and learning to sharpen carving chisels in case?
flettya rock is an obsolete tool ......... until you don’t have a hammer!

Now thats not playing by the rules Brett it should include setting up as thats part of the game, after all a person doing it free and has to get their angles right too. It would be like playing Monopoly with someone who is Banker always..........means they have the most money.
One day I'll set up all the jigs and stop doing it free hand that best be soon hands aren't what they used to be.

I think Brett's point is correct
He's talking the medium is in question
Not the process

Disagree your saying that a person doesn't have to work out angles wheel size tool rest height, where and how to rest hands? It could take 1/2 hr to find a decent brick to hone on and in this heat an hour to raise spit to wet it.

My teachers in High School always told us that we should make sure we read the question properly before answering.
All the wheel work is already done. For freehand honing then balance the heel and toe of the bevel on chosen medium and hone - takes about a second. Setting up a Veritas Mark II jig can take another minute or three, especially getting the angle right for a hollow grind.
The only advantage of freehanding is saving the jig setup time (which is significant). The honing on any given medium takes just the same time whether freehanding or not.

The hassle here is like teachers who compound and cause confusion using the term sharpening when in fact meaning honing. My Tech and school teachers always stated sharpening is a whole process from grinding through to honing. I have yet to see a jig for back flattening during the honing process of plane blades or chisels. So you must do some hand work as well.
