On site Auction at CSIRO Black Mountain, Canberra
Due to mergers and the closure of some sections of the old Division of Entomology, CSIRO is having an auction to get rid of surplus equipment. A lot of this is of little interest to woodworkers but the closure of the termites research group has left a lot of surplus timber available which may be of interest to forum members. CSIRO is doing itself a disservice in auctioning this stuff at very short notice and in bulk lots so it will likely go very cheap. Some of the timber has been cut into small pieces for experiments with termites but could still be useful. The coachwood slabs though are very impressive pieces of timber and some are at least 400mm across and 4m long. The Trend overhead router (#142) and the metal angle guillotine (#143) are very solid ex-workshop machines.

Inspection on site is next Tuesday 14th June from 10.00 am (for CSIRO staff) or 11.00am (public) until 3.00pm.

They probably have someone already set up to take the lot, like a local firewood seller. Pity.

Lots of interesting stuff. Quite a few Honda generators. The scuba gear was a surprise though. My favourite is item 178.

I asked what would happen if it got passed in at auction and there was no plan. I have now had a proper inspection of the timber and it is really some stunning pieces and lengths. Mostly commercial quantities of 4x2 E. regnans so not something for the home woodworker unless you have a truck and a massive shed to store it in. Also for a couple of unusual boards you would have to buy the whole shelf full of timber and then remove it yourself.
I did see some long, jarrah or redgum boards, some poplar, some planed timbers and the coachwood slabs are really very impressive and would make great furniture. It is a shame as I fear there will not be a market in Canberra for someone who will use it for something other than firewood.

I don't think its scuba gear. It's self-contained breathing apparatus for inspecting silos I think.
