    Default Sun Dial Template Generator

Someone asked me how to work out the markings on a Sun Dial, so: http://www.blocklayer.com/sun-dial.aspx

Put in your Latitude and the diameter of the dial, and it draws a full scale printable template of the face with hour markings and 15 minute increments.
It also draws a full scale template for the Gnomon (the triangular shadow caster).

For really large sun dials, un-check the 'Full Scale' box and it lists the mark-out points around the circumference.

Could ask people to find their house in google maps and click on it.
That will give EXACT lat and long at the bottom of the map.

    And it won't do

For Northern hemisphere, I think you'd need a mirror image of the dial, including AM and PM.

Also, a variation for placement on a vertical wall would be nice. I have a book around here someplace that gives formulas.

As a side note, "clockwise" is clockwise because mechanical clocks were invented in the Northern hemisphere.

    Cheers,
    Joe

I'll add something like fly said to find Latitude, and have already added the Northern/Southern hemisphere option (thanks Joe)
Will also look at the vertical sundials.

There's also now a template generator to print the actual (paper popup) sundial. http://www.blocklayer.com/sundial-pop.aspx
It has the Gnomon (triangle) built into the template, so you cut it, fold the Gnomon lines and get a working sundial.
Bit of a gimmick, but the kids might like it.
