I too am interested in what the vendors don't like about the venue.
As an attendee, Rosehill is by far better than Homebush, even though further away for me. The free parking alone makes the trip worthwhile for me, but its just a nicer area. To have the option to sit outside in an almost park like area is nicer than the concrete jungle of Homebush and with the better food options this year as well.
I fear if vendors are complaining about lack of sales then maybe they need to do something about that. Why would I purchase something there and then when I could get it any day from the store for the same price. Maybe some more attractive show deals might entice people to part with their money. And what about bringing more than 5% of what your store has on offer. I go to these shows to look, feel and try out tools to see if they might be something I'm interested in purchasing, and if I like it, I'll buy it. But if you only have a tiny selection of what you sell, or the price is no better there than in store, I'm more inclined to wait.
I realise this is a gross generalisation, and a couple of vendors had quite a great range of stock and willing to let you try them out. Subsequently I know own some more of their tools.
So I'm putting the challenge out to the vendors to make these shows great again.
cheers
Shane

Arose62, firstly, im sorry that your daughter was ignored, we tried to engage as many students as possible on our stand, as they are the future of this fine tradition. And I'm glad I didn't hear that comment, something straight out of the 70's, as I would've set him straight on her behalf. Did your daughter kindly remind him that he probably should've been back at the retirement village dipping his 'nice' biscuit in his tea so as not to get under his dentures? I'm sure she was too polite for that but would've been gold if she had.
i hope you might re-think visiting next year, please don't take the short comings of some to ruin the chance for all to talk to your future wordworkers.
but just to let you know, there is one particular vendor there and is every year, and yet I wonder how he is still in business with his attitude, gruff short and damn rude. I guess some can see past that as you only have to give him money and never deal with him again, until next year that is.

Why do people who go to the shows expect a show special price.
You are already getting a special price in not paying postage and you get more advice from the retailer than you would get online.
These shows are not cheap to run for anyone concerned, you not only have the stand cost, power, telephone for eftpos, walling for signage, food for the vendors, accomodation for those traveling , extra payments for staff working the weekend,
You have to remember that a lot of these vendors are mum and dad businesses and when you demand a show price this comes out of their pocket not the supplier they get their goods from as those discounts went out years ago.
2 years before we finished doing the shows we stopped show specials and no one really noticed, occasionally we would get asked for a club discount or a show special but generally no one asked, We always looked after those that made the effort to buy up at the show as they knew that the freight on most goods was a great saving to start with.
You wonder why that vendor is grumpy well he is dealing with a whole range of grumpy old farts who think they know better than he does, why is he still in business, because he has what you want and he meets a lot of very nice people who make up for the grumpy ones, treat him nicely and he responds nicely.
Why did we stop, the main reason was the ancillary cost of doing the shows kept going up and got harder to recoup them, accomodation, food, petrol all costs you are all very aware of when travelling yourself.
So next time you go to a show dont whine about the cost and support the vendors for doing a great job in trying to keep you happy, my 2c worth rant overJim Carroll

Well said Jim. If only it was as easy as some people seem to think it is. Invariably the people who complain about these things have never been in business for themselves, or if they have they're a protected species, one man band plumbers, electricians and the like.
For small to medium retailers (and all woodwork supply companies are in this category) the margins simply aren't there like they used to be. The only way it can be done is if you'd be prepared to pay Festool prices for everything and I can't see too many buyers putting their hand up to participate on that basis.

I can't see how any vendor even breaks even with all the costs involved and the only upside for the vendor and customer is the face to face time that occurs. I took one look at it and there was no way it could even remotely work at my level of operation so I relied on the printed media. Promotion of any kind in the woodworking hobby area is a tough gig these days as there are only two magazines and then it is the internet or bust so to speak. Tmbecon do what Woodpeckers do, mass use of email to show what they have but sooner or later people get sick of reading them but it is a cheap way to reach people and in some respects the only way. I bet the vast majority of hobby woodworkers would not even be aware that this forum exists so the advertisers here do not reach anywhere like the numbers they would like to. Jim's point regarding show specials is a very real one and the expectations of the customers who look for them just add to the pressures of running a business.
