    Default Tasmanian Craft Video

The international design magazine "Monocle" has posted a 5 minute video showing a snippet of the crafts in and around Hobart, Tasmania.

Worth a look if you have a few minutes spare:

Makes me wonder why I left there.

Nothing like that in NQ. I did enjoy visiting the Australian School of Fine Wood at the Forest Heritage Centre, Dwellingup in WA near Perth recently.

Glad you enjoyed the visit, JillB. I find the woodwork galleries very inspiring. Did you call at the Boranup Gallery on Caves Road south of Margaret River when you were in WA? Boranup Gallery has a range of items including really nice pieces of furniture, trinket boxes, cutting boards and simple carved items.

BTW, I was in Dwellingup on a weekend a few months back and dropped into the Australian School of Fine Wood at the Forest Heritage Centre but it was closed. Worth checking the opening/visiting hours with the school before making that special trip. A visit is still on my "to do" list.

hi homesy135. We were driving around in SW of WA last Sept. I didn't know about the Boranup gallery, but did call in to Down Under Lumber in Busselton to see what timber was available.

At Margaret River I visited the Jahroc Gallery on the main road as you come into town from Perth, and was blown away by the beauty of all the jarrah and other timber designs. It was quite a huge display building on several different levels.

Went to Pemberton, there was supposed to be a gallery on the old cemetery road. Found it, but it had closed down a few months earlier.

Then drove 5 km south to the Golden Grape fine furniture shop - now that was something else - I could have spent the entire day there. The jarrah boxes were simply beautiful, but they wanted $300 for them

The huge jarrah boardroom tables and other furniture were absolutely mind blowing

Those places were the highlights of our trip to WA
    regards,

Default More on the "to do" list.

I'll have to put the Golden Grape Gallery on my "to do" list. Pemberton is just that little bit further than the Margaret River region from Perth.

I've visited the Jah-Roc gallery in the past. One item that caught my eye was a heavy bed frame made from weathered timber. The weathering cracks had been stabilised with black epoxy (well it looked like it) leaving a smooth finish. It was nice, as were some (most!) of the other pieces.

The Boranup Gallery has a website with some photos of the displayed furniture. Worth a google when ideas and inspiration is needed.

I notice that it was quite common to fill the exposed timber cracks with black epoxy - looked good too
