    Angry URGENT VIRUS INFORMATION

This is deadly serious! I have just received this urgent email from England.

There is a nasty trojan virus which activates on 1 June 2001 and is
distributed by email. To see if you have it and if it has been sent in an
email to you do the following:

    Click "Start"
    Click "Find"
    Click "Find Files or Folders"
enter in the virus name sulfnbk.exe
If it is found then go to the relevant directory (in my case
    C:Windows\Command)
    Delete the file
Go to recycle bin and empty the recycle bin
    Do this before 1 June
DO NOT OPEN THE FILE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, IT WILL CORRUPT YOUR HARD DISK

NB. Norton Antivirus 2000 didn't pick this one up!

On checking I find that I had also been infected and my antivirus program didn't pick it up either. Please follow the instructions above immediately.

    Cheers - Neil

Yup that one seems to be doing the rounds all over Oz.

The file is just a plain old windows file.

But it sure had a lot of people over here in a panic......reminds me of the time I took my grandfathers wooden leg off while he was sleeping and attached the handle of his vaccum cleaner to the stump.

Was pretty harmless but sucked a lot in :P

    regards,

    Allen

And then I received this email 5 hours later. I am a fool and was sucked along with many thousands of others. I appologise for any inconvenience caused. Got a beef take it up with Peter.

I've just received this email - it seems I've been had...
SULFNBK.EXE is a Windows utility that handles long filenames. Whilst
deleting probably won't do any harm it could prevent you from using
anything but THE 8.3 old DOS type filenames.

The virus warning originated in of all places, Brazil and is one of many
    designed to cause inconvenience.

For further information see : http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ven...e.warning.html

sorry if I've caused you hassle/.

    From Symantec:

    Reported on: April 17, 2001
Last Updated on: May 29, 2001 at 06:22:42 AM PDT

The following hoax email has been reported in Brazil. The original email is in Portuguese; it is followed by an English translation.

    CAUTIONS:

This particular email message is a hoax. The file that is mentioned in the hoax, however, Sulfnbk.exe, is a Microsoft Windows utility that is used to restore long file names, and like any .exe file, it can be infected by a virus that targets .exe files.
The virus/worm W32.Magistr.24876@mm can arrive as an attachment named Sulfnbk.exe. The Sulfnbk.exe file used by Windows is located in the C:\Windows\Command folder. If the file is located in any other folder, or arrives as an attachment to a email message, then it is possible that the file is infected. In this case, if a scan with the latest virus definitions and with NAV set to scan all files does not detect the file as being infected, quarantine and submit the file to SARC for analysis by following the instructions in the document How to submit a file to SARC using Scan and Deliver.
If you have deleted the Sulfnbk.exe file from the C:\Windows\Command folder and want to know how to restore the file, you should contact your computer manufacturer or Microsoft for assistance. As an alternative, If you are running Windows 98 or Windows Me, see the document How to extract files in Safe Mode under Windows 98 or Windows Millennium.
NOTE: The instructions in this document are provided for your convenience. The extraction of Windows files uses Microsoft programs and commands. Symantec does not provide warranty support for or assistance with Microsoft products.
