Thumbs up New Website for oz and nz machinery

    Hi,
Hope you guys don't mind a shameless plug for my new website www.machines4u.com
I asked Neil the modirator first but got no response, so I don't mean to irritate anyone by posting this.

I'd love some user feedback on the site from anyone who wants to visit, it's mainly aimed at businesses but I imagine it would be a good way for a serious hobbiest to get hold of some bargain machinery. It deals with woodworking, metalworking plus some glass, stone and plastics equipment.

The aim of the site is to help businesses do their homework on new equipment as well as give them a better chance of selling their used machinery. Something that's cheaper than traditional advertising and more industry focused.
There's little on the site at the moment as it's not officially launching till 01 July, but feel free to register and list any equipment you'd like to sell (it's completly free) and to let me know what you think.
So if you've got any comments, good/bad or other please let me know.

By the way, the site is currently completly free of charge so I'm not trying to make a buck by posting on this forum, all I'm after is some feedback.

    Thanks & regards

    Luke

I hear you on the orange colour, I've been staring at it for the last 6 months so I'm more used to it than most. At least it makes an impession on you though

I dare say we all appreciate you know it's a shameless plug in advance so thumbs up for being up front. Interesting site though.

Judging from the reaction of this (admittedly small) sample I'd say leave the colour as is.
In advertising it matters little whether they love it or hate it, just that they notice it.

    G'day Machines4U,

I've got to agree on the orange.

I once used the same colour (PMS 151) for a client job and when it came back from the printer and saw how in your face it was I swore I'd never use it again.

But then it does suit, so maybe just go with it. It's not that bad really.
I make things, I just take a long time.

There's a difference between an ad so annoying that you want to kill the person who made it but which sticks in your mind and a web site so blinding you can't stand to look at it. That might be counter-productive!

Exactly. My initial reaction after a few seconds was to close the tab, because I couldn't be bothered looking further- which I did. The only reason why I went back again was to see what was actually there, 'cause I was feeling guilty for not providing a more comprehensive review.

If my initial reaction counts for anything, it shows just how negatively impacting using such a in-your-face colour can be.

As far as the colour goes, I remember once being told that bright orange is the best colour for an overdue bill because the colour won't let go! It's better than one of those annoying flash sites that is forever 'loading'...

From a user perspective, I think it needs more interest. I'd include a 'listing of the day' photo on the front page, and make each category browseable via thumbnail link from the front page. (some people don't get search, and you will lose them)

Other than that, looks pretty well done. Good luck with it!

Thanks for your feedback guys, I really appreciate it as I've become somewhat blind to my own site while building it.

I orginally chose to run with the bright orange colour to try and stand out from every other white background site you see on the net. What I have realised though is that it shows up pretty bright on some monitors so I will see if I can tone it down a little without loosing the impact I was looking for.

Thanks for the feeback on the front page, alas I am unable to put browsable categories on there as with metalworking and glass/stone/plastics there are just toooo many categories:confused:

A user can browse just by selecting a category & subcategory then clicking search. But you are right, this needs more work so I'll put some thought into it.

Yes there is a "Featured listing" section coming for the front page, at the moment the "Advertise Free" banner is taking up the space where it is going, so will have to shuffle things round a bit to get everything fitting properly.

I've also avoided flash players stuff on the site as there's nothing more annoying than a slow site!!!!! Let me know if it's taking it's time to load.

keep any other comments coming, they help a lot!

    Thanks,
    Luke

I reckon if you retain the full colour for the banner and then fade it at least 50% for the body of the page, it will still be striking without the decibels

    Default Thanks SilentC

Was just thinking of something similar, maybe a gradual fade of the background from top to bottom on the page
