    Default Windows Vista

Who on this wide very brown land is going to go across to Vista? I was contemplating it until my neighbour gave us the low down on it.

The program itself is pretty much stable and usable but they have not solved the licencing part at all. Apparently if you purchase Vista and put it on you machine away you go and use it for six months then decide to rebuild your machine, oops sorry you cant install Vista on this machine as it is a pre-used copy. Then you need to contact Microsoft and answer a thousand questions and jump through a hundred hoops just so you can use something you paid for ages ago.

He also said that no Uni's would use it because it just is not suitable for lab use, which by definition needs to be able to be rebuilt quite often.

It is yet another example of the absolute arrogance of Microsoft and the contempt they hold for their customers.

As someone said in another thread on a totally unrelated subject "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

That will be my approach. I initially went to XP from 2000, just after it was released, had so many problems with it that I went back to 2000 and stayed there ever since.

Does everything I want to do, easy to install etc etc.

Never had a problem with XP Pro. Based on nt4 as it is. Won't bother with Vista unless it comes preloaded with a new machine which I may or may not buy at some future time. What I'd really like to do would be to move to Linux. But I don't have the patience to work it all out. Plus I can never get it to work with the internet or my network.

Pretty sure you'll have the same problem if you change lots of hardware on an XP machine.

I am very happy at the moment with my computer running OSX and Windows XP. Don't really want to stuff it up now everything is running smoothly.

True, I'm guessing they've made it even worse. Here's a suggestion - get a Mac. This is my first (since my Apple ][e) and I was stuck on Windows since Windows 3.1, and have a mountain of software for it, but I am a convert.

They are great hardware, equivalent price (the iMac and Mac Mini are very price-competitive), you use OSX, and if you have to, can still run Windows if you have to (and you can do it from within OSX if you don't want to reboot the computer).

We just did a full rebuild on our laptops. Dell Inspiron 8600's with XP pro. Not a hiccup. Mind you we did the rebuild then spent an hour on each machine upgrading to service pack 2 and all relevant AVG Anti-virus/ anti-spyware upgrades.

I have all the same programs but have gone from 160 gig H/D with 30 gig free to having close on 80 gig free. It is amazing just how much crud you pick up from different sites around the place.

If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Never ever "upgrade" to a new Microsoft product until at least 6 months after its release and you really need it.

Vista hasn't even been officially released yet and Microsoft announced a major patch for it last week...
