Wood slab cake stand
Hi there,
I am not entirely sure I'm in the right spot, right forum or even right website but I thought I'd give it a go.
I'm after having a wood slab cake stand made. Basically just a slice of tree trunk with the bark left on that is sealed to food grade standards (very important). There is a US based website that has exactly what I want but they are around USD100 plus USD55 for shipping, which is a bit over my budget.
Size-wize I'm looking for about 16" or 17" across and about 4" tall. Ideally I'm looking for a sort of wood that is going to be lovely to look at, but also very hard wearing. Something that won't fall apart or have bits of bark flaking off etc.
If anyone would be interested in taking this job on or if anyone wants further info then please do get in touch! It's for an event in Perth in early April 2012 so hopefully that is leaving plenty of time!
Thanks for reading!
Cheers,
Janelle

Janelle,
Have you got any pictures of what you're looking for? I'm not in a position to make one at the moment but it might help others in here decide if they can take on the task
CorbsIt's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Welcome you sort of are in the right place, a bit confusing you mention Perth yet your location shows London Is that Perth Australia or UK. This being an Aussie site.
Now if your in UK try this forum many a good woodturner/woodworker in the UK UKworkshop.co.uk

Hi Janelle, it would make it a lot easier if your exact location was known so someone local to you may be able to help out.. Welcome to the forum by the way.
Price wise, the figure you mention for the piece you are after is not overly priced in my opinion considering the size. shipping is rather costly from the US which does add to the cost quite a bit.
Another point to remember, if you are purchasing something along those lines with bark still attached from overseas, there are strict laws as to bringing something like that into some countries, Australia being one of them and I would imagine UK would have similar laws in place.Reality is no background music.
Cheers John

Sorry for the confusion everyone! I am currently in London, UK but will be in Perth, Australia by the time the cake stand is required.
This is a link to the US website I mentioned in my original post.

Please let me know if there is any further info that might be helpful.
Thanks for responding!

I know! It's really simple but I just can't find anywhere in Perth selling that sort of thing. I need someone who is handy with a chainsaw!!
The only thing is it does need to be sealed to food grade standards and I am not 100% sure of the substances that would need to be used.

I just read about something called "salad bowl finish".... would that be a product that could be used to safely seal the stand once cut?
Also, I would be happy to pay for shipping it from the east coast to Perth. I just thought the $100 plus $55 shipping from the US was a bit much. Or is that actually quite reasonable?
munruben - the import laws were one other reason I was a bit reluctant to buy from that US website.
Thanks for being so helpful everyone.

For that application any finish really would do as most as most finishes are inert when dry and people don't eat the board.
I am assuming it is a one off use and the couple get to take it home after the wedding.
$100 is very reasonable I reckon.
The other problem that you have using a log cut like that is that it will split unless dried very cautiously and over a long period of time.
I don't wish to sound so negative but merely alerting you to some problems that you may encounter.

Me three!!
Hi, Im in exactly the same boat, but after approx 15-20 large round slabs (for table centrepieces), and approx 180 smaller coaster sized slabs (for table settings)
If anyone set up an etsy shop from Australia you would make a KILLING!! There are so many beautiful things, and relativey cheap even including postage, but its all in te US! Im an Aussie, my man's a bushie, i want Aussie wood (and yes i could get him to do it but he is already flat out with work so i dont want to hassle him)
Feel free to email or reply if you can help, my email is [email protected].
Also if anyone has a website they sell these from please let me know, i am a member of many bridal pages and so many people want this sort of stuff!!
