So for my weekend.. can't emphasis enough all the above comments - the weekend was top flight, and for the cost of a donation to a charity supports (hope everyone's chipped in), we got a tonne of information people pay hundreds of dollars for and never get a trainer with 's experience & knowledge. (Or see the " hip shuffle").

    I have here

    1. a really cool example of goblet turning - thanks heaps for that!
    2. a chunk of osage orange (me thinks pens...... )
    3. approx 8 hours of raw video footage
    4. a less than happy swmbo - had permission, but have to pay the piper now

Great weekend - thanks a heap . For those that missed out - you really did.

Add another thanks to the chorus from myself and Robert. It was a great weekend, good fun and very informative. Sunday's woodturning 101 was a real bonus. We're sorry we had to leave early and missed the turning of the goblet. Hopefully some of it was caught in Stuart's 8 hours of video.

Sounds like I missed out on a great day on sunday , Ah well can't win them all, been away overseas for the last 2 weekends so I would've been lynched if I was away both days this weekend as well .
At least if I need any turning done now there are plenty of experts, Groggy, scooter etc etc .
Many thanks to for giving up his spare time and spending a weekend at work to show us how its done.

I had a ball and even learned something, so a sucessful day all round I'd say.

    Cheers
    Bruce T.

Basically it will be spread over the whole weekend with the building of a project from start to finish, in this case a coffee table.

It will cover: timber selection, rough cut, machining (jointer and thicknesser), biscuit jointing (sorry don't have a Domi), mortise and tenon joints with a router, turning the 4 legs (copy turning by hand), glueing and clamping, assembly, sanding and finishing. From rough sawn to finished article.

Each step will be discussed and other ideas tossed around and tried if time permits.

The finished article will be auctioned off via the board and the proceeds to a charity of Neil and I's choice.

There will be a donation entry to this and all proceeds will go to charity after costs (timber) have been taken out.

A BBQ is available for use. Bring your own chairs.

An itinary will be posted so that you can pick and choose what stage you wish to see or you can be here for the whole weekend.
.... not impressed that u were turning without me. u r in such big trouble it's not funny............. well actually it is, but hey, we're sick and twisted turners o our sense of humour is pretty warped. hahahahahaha

Mumble mumble - 8 hours of tape to go through... Imported the first hour onto the computer, so have begun the editing job - will upload it as I finish each section. Look for it in the video section of the forums. Unlikely to be before the end of the week.

Don't expect perfection - there was only 1 camera, and it wasn't staged, so we just had to guess where would be a good vantage point. Traffic noise - well, no worse than it was for those of us there!

Some things I have learned from the weekend:

    1. What a roughing gouge is - been using a spindle gouge up until now - didn't know the difference (yeah ok - I have seen commercial vids, flicked through a few books etc, but nothing beats actually seeing it in person, or at least on 's video....(heh heh - torture for the rest of ya - having to wait and all))

Straight down to Carbatec, and bought a 1-1/4" HSS Hamlet with 14" handle. Oh yeah! (and I also discovered that all my other chisels are actually rather small - dwarfed by this one - how the hell I was able to rough out in the past I can't imagine!)

    2. Run the lathe fast - 3000 RPM. Don't bugger around with slow speeds - get that puppy up there! Tried it (with the new roughing gouge) and the blank was round almost before I got the tool onto the rest..

    3. That there is an animal called a steb style centre - that makes a lot of sense - never liked the 4 prong drive centres - carbatec sell a cheapie for $39, but I'm quite keen on getting the larger 7/8" or so that had - about $100 from Carrolls. Anyone know what size had? The carbatec one looked a lot smaller.

    4. iMovie cannot handle the sort of movie editing I normally do - going to have to recapture the video again (which for laymen means transferring the video from the camera into the computer), and give it to a decent program (Adobe Premiere) to do the editing. Oh well - sorry guys - you'll need to be patient a little longer. I will definitely be doing the releases in parts. Given how much footage I have, think I will put together a full quality DVD as well - so many ideas, so little time. Perhaps it could (if it turns out good enough) to be available as a purchase (with all the money going to the charity supports) Dunno - will have to see what the star of the show thinks.

    I'm pretty sure 'twas a 1"

But I won't swear to it.

(Bugga! Just noticed I missed my 5k post. Wonder what piece of drivel I wasted it on?)
