Battle of the Bands Pics
Here are a few pics of this years battle of the Bands from my school. Before teaching IT/WW I was a music teacher and I'm still asked to help out from time to time.
I as long as I get a keeper or two I'm happy. Its much easier with digital now as the cost of clicking off a few frames is much lower over all even though the equipment cost has gone up.
Context: Images shot live at the Battle of the bands final held in a smallish drama studio. Kids did the light show and the sound mixing. I had free access to the stage. shot with ambient light and a bit of post processesing, photoshop is great.
OK ...do you like any of the images? What would you do to improve them?

Hey nice pics Kevin, some budding anguses there by the looks!
What's the photo gear you used, what ISO etc?
Here a band shot taken 10 years ago with a 1.5 Mp Kodak camera. Original Photo is 6 x 1.5 Mp or ~8 MP Original photo. If you look at the bottom left of the pic you will see that the same guy with the cap appears in two places because he moved in between the shots.
Oh yeah it was my sons band and they won the open section of the Annual Gozzy Rock Battle of the bands. The following year they went on to have 2 trombones added to their line up and they stayed together as a lcoal pub band until earlier this year - 14 years all up.

Nice shot Bob. Ilike the way you have stiched it all together.
Great to hear that your son's high school band lasted 14 years. I'm a big fan of kids being encouraged to have a go and work at things. Music, art, drama, sport.
I've been lucky to have several of my ex students go on with their love of music and experience a bit of good fortune over the years.
Camera gear. Canon 20D, 18-55 f2.8 IS lens for all of these shots.
ISO 800, apeture f2.8-5.6, sutter speed range 1/8th-1/125th dpending on the stage lighting at the time. All shots hand held.
I've a number of L series lens and a whole kit of '80s Contax Zeiss lenses, 21mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 135mm and 200mm. I use all of these from time to time when the context is right. A simple adaptor and the old manual focus lenses work a treat.
The modern AF zooms with IS are hard to beat for action shots but given a static subject in reasonably stable light I'll go for the old lenses every time.
Lots of people seem to have a look on the photography sub forum but not many comment or respond. Oh well!
take care
Kevin

Cheers Kevin, Thanks for the info.
I've had a 20D with the 17 to 85 mm kit lens for 4 years or thereabouts - looking to upgrade to a newer body and keeping the same lens but adding a macro for taking pics of ww detail.
Cheers

Thanks for the feed back Bob.
I too will be looking to upgrade to either the 50D or 5DII if I can convince SWMBO.
as for the macro lens I found this article a fair overview of the two lenses I'd look at first.

I'd also consider a 60mm Contax macro if you can find one.
All the best

Hey Kev, Got the 50D today with the Canon 100 mm lens.
A bit faster but very similar to the 20D - really nice to use.
Still getting my licence with it!

I'm green with envy.
Both the camera and the lens have great reviews and from all reports the transition from the 20D to the 50D is pretty smooth for most.
Looking forward to seeing a few images Bob.
So, we'll see a pic or two in the next few weeks?
All the best

Cheers Kev. It's that crazy situation that when new toys arrive and one has stuff all time to play around with it! The 3 minutes I have spent with it so far suggest it's very much like a 20D but with a big donk! The 100 macro is fast focusing although like any lens it can get tricked in low light. I'm going to take it to work today and if I get a spare second I'll put it on a Macro stand and see what it can do.
