    Default Camera slider

Gentlemen, this is my first post in the photography forum, hello.

I'm in the throws of completing a camera slider.

Basically it consists of a 1.5M length of OpenBuilds V-slot track, a stepper motor, camera carriage, and toothed belt.

The unit is controlled by an Arduino UNO with a sketch jointly written by foobillious and RustyArc in the CNC forum.

So far so good, now my problem.

What I intend doing is firing the camera shutter with a pair of Aputure Trigmaster Plus units, one will be attached to the camera as receiver, the other, transmitter, on top of a control box at the end of the track.

Specifically, is there a way of triggering the transmitting Trigmaster externally without the need to push the fire button?

There are three ports in the side of the Trigmaster, one marked "Flash", one marked "Camera" and the other marked "PC Sync".

I had hoped that by installing a 2.5mm plug and cable into the "Camera" port, and shorting the wires together, the Trigmaster would fire, but it does not.

To explain a bit further, the Arduino powers the stepper for say half a turn then stops, closes a relay to trigger the camera, then moves on etc, etc.

I don't want to trigger the camera with a cable draping down from the control box.

If I haven't lost you, I'm looking for ideas.

    Ken

The "PC" socket looks to be a TRS type - are you using one and have you tried shorting the different combinations of the 3 wires?

    Default Camera trigger

    Hi Rusty,

Your previous help with the Arduino sketch was invaluable. TRS?, that's a term I don't know.

No, I haven't tried the socket you suggest, will have a go tomorrow.

Failing that, it seems I may need to pull the the transmitter unit apart, and try to hack it and bring out some wires that duplicate the push button.

The camera port should take a TRS plug, that's a stereo-style plug that has 3 connections, Tip, Ring and Sleeve (hence TRS). That's because shutter buttons are 2-stage, the half-press triggering the autofocus. Some combination of shorting 2 of the 3 might trigger the unit.

Otherwise, you could just hook up to the hotshoe - shorting the centre contact to the sliding connection should fire it.

    Default Camera triggering

Rusty, you are a genius, your suggestion works so I'm in business.

This saves me from hacking into the Trigmaster push button switch.

    Default Camera slider update

KB, you'll have to be patient a little longer.

As soon as I have finished the control box, and attached it, I promise I'll put some photos up.

Just waiting on push buttons to arrive, then into it.
