Myself I have the Canon SX710HS, 30 x optical zoom and 20.3 mega pixels and the Nikon Coolpix P900, 83 x optical zoom or 24 to 2000mm and 16 mega pixels. Both are absolutley great cameras.

I doubt whether it matters much what camera you get or got the most important thing is the glass
the better the lens the better the photo
and you said you wanted crispness
and also the bigger the sensor the better the photo
for example the new iPhone is 12 megapixels but I bet my older canon 20D at 8 megapixels will take better photos

Agree 100% with comments particularly with respect to iPhones and Smart Phones. They are Ok for 'selfies' and snap shots which are going to be posted to social media, but are next to useless for any serious photography. Save the money and you can buy a Canon, Nikon or Sony DSLR with a decent lens for the same price.

I am far from decent at photography but if you are going to be using lower end lenses it may be wise to do as others have said and buy a higher spec older camera. I occasionally use my father's 550d for a couple of quick bird pics in it back focuses quite badly and the cheaper body doesn't allow yo to calibrate the auto focus.

I'm about to move to a Fuji system camera as for my sub par skills I find them much more suitable for my requirements, I would much rather have a smaller camera that has an EVF with peek over an optical viewfinder.

Thank you for your input Ubernoob. I have shouted myself a new Fujifilm Fiepix S9400W which has, so far, done all I had hoped for.

As a 'not too fancy' photo taker, I need all the help I can get and this one is doing a great job.

    Cheers, Fred

Wow, that thing is impressive for the money. I'd imagine you'd need all the stars to align to get a nice photo at the max focal length but I really like that it goes to 24mm, for me I'd end up with something around that and a tele and yours has both so it should be a bunch of fun.

I swapped lenses with a fellow dad at hockey trials last year (I use a Canon 100 - 400 for sports photography)
he was amazed at the difference in clarity etc but his wife couldn't see any difference - but then she was probably not wanting him to spend any money!
