Canon CCD Malfunction
Canon has announced a Service Notice relating to anomalies in the CCD connection in several camcorders and digital cameras. This anomaly may result in a distorted or absent image on the LCD monitor screen, which also appears in the recorded image.
Canon has offered, REGARDLESS OF WARRANTY STATUS, to repair the products listed, if they determine that the malfunction is caused by a defective sensor connection. They will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.

I just learned this today (Sunday, 26 Aug 2007), and haven't yet contacted them for particulars. But if you're affected by this, I'd suggest withholding a trip to the dumpster until you learn more.

That's interesting. I've got an S60 that is a couple of months out of warranty and it has just started slightly blurring the upper right quadrant of pictures. I wonder if it is a related problem?

My A300, several years old, has been misbehaving recently. Sounds like a dead ringer for the problem they describe. Still Sunday here, so I can't call them for about 10 hours.
I've pretty much decided to get a Pentax digital so I can use my K-mount collection, but it'd still be nice to have the pocket size Canon. The Canon shoots at low resolution for forum pics without re-sizing. The Pentax's smallest file size needs to massaged to get under the forum size limit.

Timeline
Monday, 27 Aug 2007, 935am: "estimated 8 minutes waiting time for representative."
Exchanged info with Canon.
Monday, 27 Aug 2007, 328pm: e-mail from Canon w/ Evaluation Request form
Monday, 27 Aug 2007, 406pm: e-mail UPS shipping label from Canon
Friday, 07 Sep 2007, ~100pm: snail mail (dated 04 Sep) from Canon advising repairs to begin.
Friday, 07 Sep 2007, 700pm: FedEx delivery from Canon.
Total duration: 11 calendar days. YMMV.
Total Cost: ZERO. (except for about 50 cents worth of petrol consumed to UPS store; cardboard and bubble wrap were on hand, so I don't consider expense)
Impressions: Wow! Positive sense began with their estimate of waiting time. All handled in a very professional manner. And if the snail mail had been slower, the package would have arrived first.
