At Grumpy John's suggestion I'm posting a couple of pictures with and without the vibration control on the lens activated. Some lenses advise switching off the vibration control (tamron), when the camera is tripod mounted. I use long exposures (need a remote shutter release) to get a good depth of focus (narrow aperture) and at these settings, with my Tamron lens, I do get image degradation when vibration control is activated. As John points out, some modern lenses are clever enough to know when the camera is on a tripod and turn the antivibration gizmo off automatically.
Canon calls its anti movement technology IS (image stabilisation), and Nikon has VR (vibration reduction).
