This is a subtle point but technically speaking the sky makes or generates no significant daylight so it is not a source of light or photons. What the atmosphere does is scatters sunlight and the amount of light scattered depends on the colour with blue light being scattered more than red so this is why the sky appears blue. The blue light from the sky is still from the sun, it's just been bounced around a bit by the atmosphere.

As far as I know the fasteners are known as 'T nuts', or that's what I call them and the guys in the hardware shop generally know what I mean!
30x30 pine would probably do the job OK - I just used the Blue Gum because the club has a pile I helped harvest - gotta get something back at some point
If you've got a steady hand and a good eye you could make the finger/box joins with a hand saw - but you might do just as well to use a bridle joint if you don't have the power tools.

Well executed as usual Vern, you certainly attack all you projects in a professional way. I know that it's not out of financial concerns that you did this, but it was the challenge. Perhaps you could go one step further and make a light tent like this one.




Oops , didn't read the first line of the original post - "I've been mucking about with light tents and artificial lighting for my turnings for years now and finally gave up. Decided the best results I got were with morning light with the subject on white card but this was a pain to set up where the light was best at any given time." Still there could be a few pointers there for lighting ideas.

No worries John - your link was an interesting watch anyway I tried pretty well everything he suggested but still wasn't happy with the results and found the diffused morning light gave me the results I was looking for Wanna buy a hardly used, 1m3 linen light tent??? - no frame - already demolished that
