Canon 70-300 mm
Same photo setup
this lens has two IS modes, mode 1 and mode 2
mode 1 is for general handheld and mode 2 for panning
I kept the same setup as for the last series
ie 1/15th sec aperture 32 iso 640
I cropped the photos down to 1500x1000
photos at 70mm
Handheld IS mode 1
b1_2671.jpg
tripod IS mode 1
b2_2672.jpg
tripod IS mode 2
b3_2673.jpg
Tripod IS off
b4_2674.jpg
Now lens at 300m still 1/15 and 32
Handheld IS mode 1 landscape and portrait
HH1_2675.jpg HH2_2676.jpg
Handheld IS mode 2 landscape and portrait
HH3_2677.jpg HH4_2678.jpg
Tripod landscape IS mode 1, IS mode 2 and IS off
TL1_2679.jpg TL2_2680.jpg TL3_2681.jpg
Tri[pod portrait IS mode 1, IS mode 2 and IS off
TP1_2682.jpg TP2_2683.jpg TP3_2684.jpg
This might indicate that I need a better tripod (where's that manfrotto link?)
also it might indicate that I need a remote release (hmm )
as I'm sure that the camera could have been more stable
A less shiny photographic topic might have also been a good idearegards

Gee Nick, that lens doesn't like being used hand held in portrait mode does it . I think you're right about your choice of subject, something with a bit of texture would probably have been a better choice. I know a place in Kununurra where you can buy some good Aboriginal art .
Thanks for the effort. While these tests we're doing fall way short of controlled tests done in a laboratory I believe they give a more realistic idea of what to expect in the real world. To grow old is inevitable.... To grow up is optional

The portrait mode problems could have something to do with the old phart holding the camera - I'm going to have to review my technique. And it's interesting as I do a lot of handheld portrait aspect with this lens taking photos of my son playing sport (have also just realised that I have been using the wrong mode when panning )
also that lens is supposed to be one of the type which will recognise when it's on a tripodregards
