    Default Macro Shots

    Hi All,
Have been busy constructing the HiViz Multi-Trigger lately, so have been neglecting to take some shots.
This morning I put the nose to the grindstone and took a couple of macro's.

Ed, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the multi-trigger? Which inputs do you use and what your setup is?

    Hi Bob,
I've had the multi-trigger built for some time now, but just got to using it the other day to take some water drops on glass, using the photo-gate input, through the (separate kit) opto-coupler, to trigger the camera shutter. (see attached pics)

I also built the microphone cable (tested OK), but have not used it as of yet.

I liked the fact that there are 2 potentiometers to adjust the delay factor (coarse and fine) before the drop of water hit the glass surface, which resulted in different shapes to the impact result.

    Here's the link to HiViz:

ps. Checked out your on-line album...terrific shots
    Cheers,
    Ed

Thanks mate. I've looking at the HiViz site for a couple of days now since I saw your post. It's something I'm definitely going to explore. How many flashes do you use? I have a canon 580EX Speedlite (the first model).
A few years ago, I contacted Apollo Design Technology and they sent me a sample pack of their gels. They are a perfect size for the the speedlite's flash head. The idea being to use one flash to light the scene, and use another one to accentuate a different colour on what the camera is focused on. Just need to get that second flash

Bob, for the water drop on glass shots I only used the Yunguno Speedlite YN560 at low power just as a fill flash. Triggering of the flash is by wireless remote on the camera's hot-shoe.

The other lighting I use is continuous 85W 5500K CFL's in my DIY clamp lite fixtures with aluminum flashing wrapped around the front of the clamp lite's reflector. I bought different color 8x10 inch acetate sheets at a local art supply house. I just scotch tape the sheet onto the front of the lites for different lighting effects.

I also cut smaller rectangles from the sheets for use on the front of the flash unit.

Here's a pic of my set-up for the water drop stuff:

    a) Black-out cloth on window at rear.
    b) White foam core as a reflective backdrop.
    c) Tinted glass deck.
    d) Water valve assembly at top - right below the solenoid valve is the IR photogate sensor which triggers the camera thru the HiViz multi-trigger box and the opto-switch box.
    e) At left (mounted on the clipboard) is the Camera Axe unit that triggers the water valve. Microprocessor driven, it is easy to change the drop size and duration.
    f) Below the Camera Axe are the HiViz Opto-Switch and the Multi-Trigger boxes.
    Cheers,
    Ed

Great looking setup Ed. Intrigued by the Camera AXE. Is that pre-built and programmed? With the multi-trigger, once you set the delay, are results consistent?

Here's the web site for the Camera Axe:

Camera Axe : Dreaming Robots Store

I ordered the Shield Kit as Maurice stopped shipping the complete assembly.
Had to order the Arduino Uno separately (got it from Jameco.com). The Arduino plugs into the Camera Axe assembly (shield...why it's called a shield is beyond me) then it's a matter of downloading the Arduino application sw from the Arduino site, then downloading the Camera Axe's program from the Dreaming Robots site. Sounds like a lot, but really pretty easy...I did it and I'm not a real savvy computer type.

Yep...the drops released are pretty consistent for the type of solenoid valve that I got (same as on the Dreaming Robots site), not the most precision valve, but like most things, you get what you pay for.
    Cheers,
    Ed
