Default There was movement at the station.....

Just spent a week in the Vic High Country, second time this year.

Did some 4wd'ing and visited some very scenic places, together with son and 2 granddaughters.

A good time was had by all and it was good to pass on some "bushcraft" to the next generation.

Guess you're right about that DJ, especially in winter

This is what the area around Craigs Hut looks like on my moving map following GPS using Hema maps with OziExplorer CE. These are actually screen shots from the PC version.

And this is what the area around the Moonlight Spur Track looks like on the GPS, makes it very easy to navigate, especiall as some "comedians" turned the signs around

This area is one of my favourite places in the world, especially Jamieson (a potential retirement location). Thanks for sharing, stunning images.

It's a popular place at the moment, I've just spent a few days at Lake Cobbler. I was quite surprised at the number of people on the tracks considering it was mid-week, out of school holidays, and rainy overcast weather.

One of the better places on this planet. I have always regarded the high country as a far better place to be when there is no snow. A really good drive is from Jindayne down into Victoria or vice versa following what is left of the Snowy River in parts. I drove it in a normal car so a 4WD is not necessary.

Some great photos there Fred. I'd like to get up there for a photo session some time but I don't have a 4WD, how much would be accessible in a Mazda 6.

    Thanks John.

There are some quite good unsealed gravel roads in the High Country, in fact the road from Jamieson to Woods Point is one of those. The road up to Mt Buller is all bitumen.

To get up to Craigs Hut can be done via the Circuit Road, which was closed when we were there last, but I wouldn't call it a good gravel road. Because of that we had to go in via 2 4wd only tracks.
These tracks would not have been suitable for the large number of AWD SUVs on the market today that pretend to be 4WD because they don't have the ground clearance and low range.
A large percentage of the tracks in the High Country are closed between the end of May and the beginning of November and, as we found, they can be closed at any time outside of that period.

If you get the Hema maps for the High Country they have a good and reliable way of marking the condition of each road and track. I have their Atlas for the High Country, money well spent (about $30 at the RACV).

GJ, the trouble with all newer cars is the tyres being such a low profile. The car will do a lot of rough dirt driving, a lot rougher than most would expect but the stupid low profile tyres fitted these days cause issues. I took my new car down a dirt road not thinking of this issue shortly after I got it and came back with a damaged rim. Mind you there are some lovely areas accessed by sealed roads so don't be put off from going and having a look. The biggest issue I have about the whole area is that is snows up there and makes it inaccessible during the winter and the white stuff covers up everything, horrid stuff is snow.

A good drive from Victoria all on sealed roads would be Cann River to Delagate, up to Cooma, across the Snowy mountains Hwy through Kiandra stopping at the Abercrombie caves, onto the Hume Hwy and back down through Cockatoo and those areas. Some really nice ares in that drive.
