Nikon 70-300VR test shots
Rather than muddy up Grumpy Johns thread I will post these here.
These are a couple of test shots I took when I first got this lens to see how it went handheld with slow shutter speeds. Using the VR (vibration reduction) I got better results than I could get with my old non-VR lens.

When I first looked at the kookaburra photo I thought it looked a little soft, but at 1/15 it is astounding.
However i think that your lens may be focusing just a little forward of the subject . maybe more test shots are needed.
Fabulous stuff - thanks for posting them.____________________________________________________________

I agree, the first photo is a bit soft looking, the only reason I have used it here is because it is almost a useable shot taken handheld @300mm & 1/15th second.
You could be right about the front focus, but I am not sure where the lens actually focused on in that shot, I think it was before I set my camera to single point focus, so it maybe locked onto the branch. So it maybe could be put down to user error.
I havent had this lens very long, but I am very happy with it so far.

You nailed that one Ironwood -perfect.
I always have trouble with autofocus when shooting birds. The camera always wants to pick out some irrelevant twig or leaf.I almost always use manual focus. i find it faster and more accurate - or maybe i just don't quite know how to set all the options properly.
Good luck with the new lens, it looks like a goodun.____________________________________________________________

I snuck up and caught this girl relaxing in the bushes. Very shady so had the ISO at 800 which is about the upper limit on my camera before the noise becomes a problem.

Took a few more steps to the edge of the treeline and disturbed this fella, he took off like a shot, I snapped this pic before he got to the long grass, I missed getting all his tail in the frame unfortunately.
The camera was still set the same as for the last shot, luckily it was on aperture priority, so in the sunlight the shutter speed was a lot faster than I got in the last shot .
I was pretty happy with how the lens focused on him so quickly, he was probably doing about 50-60kmh when I took this shot.
