Default Pentax AD 8x25 WP binoculars - any good?

I've got to get binoculars for an upcoming trip to Solomon Islands, where I'll be using them for birdwatching and botany (looking up into tree canopies) in lowland rainforest. High humidity, lots of afternoon rain. So anti-fogging waterproof binoculars are the go.

I'd love to get $1000 binoculars, or $500 binoculars, and I'm sure they are really great and you'd never use anything less if you've tried them and all, but it's not going to happen.

So being realistic for the budget I have, I've found these Pentax WP 8x25 AD binoculars for $139 PENTAX 8x25 A-SERIES WP AD BINOCULARS - NITROGEN FILLED, WATER AND FOGPROOF | eBay, and wonder if anyone has tried the same model, or thinks that -- for the same price bracket -- as in, under $150 or so - there's a strong competitor I should look at?

Default Pentax AD 8x25 WP binoculars - any good?

Hello! My background is photography, worked in a photo shop for years too. Best thing to do is go to a shop and try some out. 8x is the magnification and 25 is the size of the front element (determines how much light they let in) also a factor in the size of the binoculars. For travel they would be great, small size and not too strong in magnification to hand hold. Another factor is the eye relief and how it suits your eyes. Do you wear glasses? If so, some binoculars allow you to fold back the eye cup so the eye piece will sit closer to your glasses. Hope this helps, but do go in store to try them. Pentax produce a great binocular, I think they would fit the bill. Sold lots of them too!

Hey Cal, thanks for the tips. Ok I'll try some out at Camera House, they apparently sell them (but for $60 more than the ebay guy - oh dear - I'll feel like a heel trying them out, taking their time, and then skipping). And the small size for travel and lightweight bushwalking is an attractive feature of these smaller type binoculars, you're so right there.

You're not the first and won't be the last to walk in try and walk out. Don't worry about it!
