Photo competitions
Here is a photo I entered in my camera clubs June competition, the subject matter was "Night Photography". I realise that competitions are a subjective thing and open to the judges own interpretations and personal taste. The main reason for me to enter competitions is to get constructive feedback on how to improve my images. There was only one judge and you are scored out of 15.
This is the image I entered and it scored 13/15, I was pretty happy with the score as I his scoring and comments throughout the night were very fair and accurate. He suggested the image could be improved by cropping out some of the "empty space" from the bottom of the picture an increasing the contrast to give it a bit more impact. He also thought that the church was "leaning back" and needed straightening.

I took what he said on board and played around a bit as he suggested. This is the image after cropping out some of the bottom area and upping the contrast, I also pushed the vibrance and clarity a bit further.

I then "straightened" the church, but this caused other issues, so I don't know if this actually improves the photo or not.

Confidence, the feeling you have before you fully understand the situation.
What could possibly go wrong.

Is it possible to fix the distracting blue haze around the building on the left?
Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

As you mention it can be from ones own perspective. I prefer to have the church leaning back as it I am laying on the ground looking up.

I like the second cropped option even if the church is leaning. The third option with the straight church distorts the building on the right to a point of distraction.
Keeping in mind I am just looking at the photo on my phone but it looks like some riot police off to the left.
The recommendation of the judge of cropping out the foreground appears to be a very valid opinion. The cropped version frames the shot much better. Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

It is probably lens distortion you want to fix first, keystone second, and straighten after that. They all look a bit weird, but I'd have stuck with the first in terms of 'straightness'.
