Any advice for a newbie? This is my wife's first effort capturing a flower with her first SLR (Canon 600D). Taken in my parents garden in Montrose, Victoria.
She has always talked about getting a SLR so I got her one for her birthday.
Would appreciate any tips for close up flower and plant photography which seems to be her interest.

Hi Danny. I am not familiar with the Canon models as I am a Nikon man, but any of the newer SLR's will be able to take great flower pics.
Which lens is your wife using ? Some lenses are better than others for this kind of work.
My advice would be to look at plenty of flower photos, and pick a couple that she likes, then try to take a similar photo. eg. how is the flower framed in the photo, how is the lighting etc.
A good place to start with the camera settings would be ISO 100 or 200, f8, set the camera to aperture priority, if the lighting is too low at these settings for a handheld shot, she may need a tripod.
A bit of practice and she will be on her way.
Post her photos here and ask for feedback.
I like the photo you have posted, the lighting is very nice. The only thing I would change is to position the main flower a bit better in the frame. The top of the flower is cut off.Brad.

This flower grows on a vine beside my house. I think it is called a Flame Lily.
