Ready for Irene
Well, it's been quite year weather wise here in the north-east U.S.
Had a couple of brutal snowstorms earlier in the year, and a couple of "firsts" this week.
Tuesday we had an earthquake (nothing major...according to the folks on the west coast), and now hurricane Irene is bearing down to soak us in the early morning hours tonight. There have been mandatory evacs all along the Jersey coast.
Even though Irene won't be another Katrina, which did quite a bit of damage in New Orleans some years back, folks here are taking the warnings seriously and preparing for the wind and rain.
Not much different in the nature world either...on my walk this morning I spotted these mushrooms with their "umbrellas" up and ready for the storm.

Ed, Irene is something to be afraid of, hope it stays only with rain.
Unpredictable thing despite all the forecasts....)))
Here in Holland it's not better, thunderstorms, so flooded streets and houses, pouring rain, in short a lousy summer.
Nice mushroom pictures, is it not a bit to early for those guys?
Stay safely.

Hi Ad,
Yep, just rain would definitely be preferable, but like you say, hurricanes can be unpredictable. Not a stranger to them...wen't through more than a few when we lived in Florida.
Not surprised to hear that it floods in Holland...isn't that practically a way of life there?
Now, about the "mushrooms"...guess I should have called them what they are, not what they are not.
They are actually just a type of fungus (NOT edible) that grows in the debris left over when a tree is cut down and the stump is ground down.
The town that I live in (Palmyra) has been chosen as a "Green Zone" meaning the township gets state and federal funds to maintain a goodly supply of trees. As the older trees die off, they are removed and new saplings are planted in their place ~~~ in actuality 2 or 3 are planted to replace the one removed.Cheers,
Ed

Ed, I live in Bergen op Zoom.
Bergen op Zoom is situated on a plateau 14 meters above sea level, so it is high for Dutch standards.
We did not get wet feet.
''Bergen'' means in English mountains.
''op Zoom'' has to do with a small river that runs through the Northside of the town.

Sounds like a neat place that you live at, Ad.
A great thing about these forums is knowledge gained from folks like you from near and far sharing tidbits about where they live.
Do you have any pics from home that you'd like to share with the forum...would be great to seeCheers,
Ed

Ed, think that's a nice, where do you live off topic subject, for such a big friendly family as this forum is, you know only names or nicknames, but not where they live.
I'll try to make a kind of a slide show of Bergen op Zoom, as this is an almost 800 years old town, with loads of beautiful monuments and old buildings.
