I'm wondering why I can't see the EXIF data of my images (Using exif viewer). I only just noticed this after viewing Ironwoods Post Your Flower Pics thread. I can see the EXIF data for his photo's, I can also see the EXIF data for Avery's, Dai Sensei's and Fenderbelly's images.
I can't see EXIF data for Adynaton's, Dabbler's or Allan's images. I might get DJ or Steve the 'puter guru to have a look.

DJ has asked me how I upload my images so I'm going to do a step-by-step on what I do.

First off I'll just say that I shoot all my photos in RAW (not in the raw) and process with Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop. I then save the image as a high quality JPEG file. This file is too big for forum use so I resize it/them with Quick Photo Resizer. At this stage the photo still has all it's EXIF data.

    Resizing the image.

At this stage the image still has all it's EXIF data.

To upload my image I scroll down to Manage Attachments and click on the button.
    Manage Attachments.jpg

I then click on the Add Files button.
    Add Files.jpg

    And click Select Files
    Select Files.jpg

After selecting the images I want to upload I then click on the Open button, click on Upload Files, check the files I want to insert and then click Insert Inline.
    Upload Files.jpg

When the image appears in the edit window I double click on it and a new window comes up and I select large and click on OK.

And that's how I put my images online.

    But no EXIF data

I noticed your file was (89% compressed) and 289 kb.
This means it's bigger than the 250 kb limit set by the forum software for jpegs so the forum software further compresses the image and will strip out the EXIF data at the same time.

I tested this out with these two images
The first one is compressed so that it is only 72 kb before upload - it retains its EXIF data
The second one was 400 kb and so the forum software further compressed the image down to 109 kb and stripped out the EXIF data

FWIW I use Photoshop "Save for Web" for all my images. I typically generates 800 x 533 pixel image sizes of around 150k.

Your pics are looking better now GJ.

Have you done a comparison on loading one at just under the forum limit, e.g. 245kb. Then compressing the same pic to a smaller size, e.g. 100kb and loading it as well to see if you can detect any difference ?

I havent done anything scientific, but have started aiming for a smaller file size to upload onto the web, after another forum I am a member of, had lots of images stolen. It is a photography forum, and the limit there is something like 2.5mb, some members were loading big files of some of their best work only to have it stolen by some grub who then passed it off as their own.
I figure the smaller the file size, the less attractive it will be to rip it off, they can still use them on websites etc, but they wont be doing any prints with only 100kb.

Am I correct in thinking the forum s/w is friendlier towards larger images than before, and just re-sizes as it goes.

I used to pre-process most images for size etc when posting. I stopped doing that recently. Maybe I should do it start again.

As Bob said it looks as though the forum software resizes and also strips out data on oversize images.
I used to resize to around 300kb, but now I've set my resizing program to a max of 245kb and it seems to be working ..

If you don't me asking Brad, which photography forum are you with?

I think the answer lies in how you save your finished photograph.
I was always told to save them as " SAVE AS " as against " save " because the " SAVE AS " keeps all the data neded by Exif.

    That will be application dependent.
In Photoshop SAVE will keep the EXIF data
But SAVE FOR WEB in Photoshop will strip the EXIF data out irrespective of the size.
