Default Lines from songs that get you

Nobody listens to the lyrics, I know. But every now and then you do and a line gets you for some reason.

One that always does for me is from "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight" by The Jam. If anyone doesn't know the song, a brief synopsis is that this poor bloke is on his way home with a take-away curry, his wife waiting at home "polishing the glasses and pulling out the cork" when he is accosted by some thugs, who mug him and ultimately inflict upon him a mortal wound. As he's dying his last thought is:

"I glance back on my life
    And think about my wife
cause they took the keys - and she'll think its me"

    Dunno, gets me every time...

America's Sister Golden Hair gets me every time, it reminds me of SWMBO when I first met her as she had long golden hair.

    Weird I know.

Well I tried to make it Sunday, but I got so damn depressed
That I set my sights on Monday and I got myself undressed
I ain't ready for the altar but I do agree there's times
When a woman sure can be a friend of mine

Well, I keep on thinkin' 'bout you, Sister Golden Hair surprise
And I just can't live without you; can't you see it in my eyes?
I been one poor correspondent, and I been too, too hard to find
But it doesn't mean you ain't been on my mind

If you don't want me I'll dry my tears and move on
If you don't want me I'll dry my tears and move on

You treated me just good enough until now
But if you're tired of me I'll get over you somehow
Oh, if you don't want me I'll dry my tears and move on

If you don't need me there's someone else who needs me out there
She's kind and tender and one day I'll find her I swear
So set me free while I've still got time
Don't try to hide your shame, dear, from my eyes
Oh, if you don't want me I'll dry my tears and move on

    Faded love
As if you need a reason
Am I out of your dreams
    Or just out of season
    Oh the flame of love
    Oh you wouldn't understand
You hide it in your heart
You don't hold it in your hand

If you don't want me I'll dry my tears and move on
If you don't want me I'll dry my tears and move on

My suits got creases and my shoes have got shine
Let me know soon I'll find a better use for my time
Oh if you don't want me
    If you don't want me
Oh, if you don't want me I'll dry my tears and move on
I'll dry my tears and move on
I'll dry my tears and move on
    Cheers

I do . There's a Police song that always gets me, "King of Pain" can't remember the lyrics just now but they pluck at the heart strings. Also been listening to a "Dido" album recently, (picked up a swag of cds for $1 each at a garage sale during my road trip) it's probably more than a little to do with my current state of mind but some of the lyrics have had me in tears.

this is all a little vague, bout 30 years ago, can't remember the surf movie title, a young rabbit surfing perfect Kirra, I mean perfect, he's just dancing with Kirra and the overlayed music was from Gallager and Lyle (may have mispelled their names), don't know the title and few words, some of which were (I think):

"Stay young with your rock and rollin
you've got everything that you need,
stay young keep your wheels in motion,
all the best things in life are free".

Better if you can hear the music, and see the rabbit.

    Guy Clark..."Stuff That Works"

I've got an old Blue shirt & it fits me just fine,
I like the way it feels, so I wear it all the time,
I've got an old guitar.....won't ever stay in tune,
I like the way it sounds in a dark and empty room.

Stuff that works......stuff that holds up
The kind of stuff you don't hang on the wall.
    Stuff that's real.....stuff you feel.
The kind of stuff you reach for when you fall.

    "Get off the table Mable,
    The money's for the beer".

    Or

"She was only an opticians daughter,
But, two glasses and she made a spectacle of herself".

    Or

"What is this thing called Love"?
    Buzza.

"All those who believe in psycho kinesis . . . raise my hand".

About 20 years ago I broke my leg badly a week before my brothers wedding up in Orbost, East Gippsland. Was supposed to be best man.

Lying in the royal melbourne hossy, night before the wedding (happened to be my bday as well), listening to the radio & Neil Finn/Crowded House sing "Better be home soon"

Unloaded me. Still think of it when I hear the song.

    Cheers..................Sean

    It was just before dawn
One miserable morning in black 'forty four.
    When the forward commander
    Was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn.
    And the Generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held back
The enemy tanks for a while.
    And the Anzio bridgehead
    Was held for the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives.

    And kind old King George
    Sent Mother a note
When he heard that father was gone.
    It was, I recall,
In the form of a scroll,
    With gold leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
    His Majesty signed
    With his own rubber stamp.

    It was dark all around.
There was frost in the ground
    When the tigers broke free.
    And no one survived
From the Royal Fusiliers Company C.
    They were all left behind,
    Most of them dead,
    The rest of them dying.
And that's how the High Command
    Took my daddy from me.

ssgt, that one is actually Roger Waters from The Wall. It's about his Dad Eric, who was missing presumed dead during Operation Shingle in WWII. Roger never met his old man.

I like this from Dylan's "Hurricane". I don't know why though. My main interest in the song is the violin playing.

Rubin could take a man out with just one punch
But he never did like to talk about it all that much.
It's my work, he'd say, and I do it for pay
And when it's over I'd just as soon go on my way

Gotta say I'm with Silent and ssgt on this one. I have never served but it is songs about war that put a lump in the throat for me.

Anything from Travelin Soldier (Dixie Chicks), Band played Waltzing Matilda (Eric Bogle) or even I was only 19 (Redgum) to name a few.

I'm not entirely sure why. I thinks it's from gratitude of those who fought for this great country and made the ultimate sacrifice in foriegn lands (OK maybe not the Dixie Chicks one). Many of the songs about mateship/brotherhood found in war and as I said I have never served but this still strikes a chord with me.

    Cheers,

The tears have all been shed now,
    we've said our last goodbye,
His souls been blessed, he's laid to rest, and now I'm all alone.
Oh I never will forget him, for he made me what I am.
Though he may be gone, memories linger on,
and I miss him, the old man.

Written and sung by The Furies. A tribute to the father of one of the group but I can't remember which one. I think of my own dad when I play this song.
    Reality is no background music.
    Cheers John
