New mini Audio System
Looking at buying a mini audio system with integrated tuner and CD player. I would like to connect a sound bar in another room. I would also like to listen to Iheart radio (so tuner may not be essential) and have airplay capability etc. to take advantage of my computer music library.
I currently have a system with a separate amp, CD player, tuner and huge speakers. I want to downsize and take advantage of new technology.
Any suggestions for systems under $1000?

I think Denon have some sexy and highly integrated systems along those lines?

A slightly different option is using a sound bar and streaming your music and radio station, you could connect a mini disc player to it you you still want to use CD’s

I need to do more research on sound bars. Are they Bluetooth only?
I have heaps of CDs and while they do come out only once in a blue moon, I would still like that option. I do have a USB CD player - might check it out.
I have downloaded a few to a iPod classic which I use in the car - excellent!
Only just started playing with Iheart radio as I’m hoping to sell the system I have. I was sending it to my airport express then through the amp. Hopefully I can go direct to the new unit/sound bar or maybe I’ll have to keep using the airport express. More research needed.
Got a recommendation on the sound bar ?
BTW - I’m not interested in subscription services such as Spotify.Last edited by Lappa; 17th June 2021 at 10:18 PM. Reason: Additional.

I have connected an old iPhone (streaming Tidal) via an Ifi DAC through an amp and speakers. The iPhone can also play Internet radio stations (via an app), and ALAC files via Vox (another app). The amp and speakers are your choice. In my workshop I have tiny Wharfdale Diamonds, which you can pick up cheaply. They are dynamic and superb.
Tidal has the option of streaming very high quality music (better than CD level). Spotify are not in this class. Tidal offers an opportunity to replace all your CDs with on-line offerings.
While I have a home system focussed on vinyl, the above is also incorporated into my main hi fi.
This is a pretty advanced system.

A sound bar can either be Bluetooth or hard wired, I haven’t used Iheart Radio but it is an app so should be able to just stream it wirelessly from your phone / device. Unless you get pleasure from using a CD player I would just upload the discs and keep all your music on a device and stream it. You then have an extremely simple solution of a Bluetooth speaker / sound bar and a phone/ device and you have access to everything
I use a Bose 700 and think it is brilliant for its size, I know all the audiophile types bag Bose but I tried all the recommended “ best” bars and liked the Bose sound quality best. Yamaha, Samsung and LG had some good options as a cheaper price point you could try. You could also look at Sonos if you want to connect up multiple speakers which you can add at any time

Thanks Derek,
My original system was a multiple system with high quality units consisting of a turntable, Cassette deck, tuner and CD stacker. As stated earlier, I also had a Apple Airport Express hooked up as well. I got rid of the turntable some years ago (along with all the vinyl - possibly a bad move) and the cassette deck a couple of weeks ago as we hadn’t used it in years. This led us to decide to sell off the remaining components and go for something smaller.
Thanks for the info on Tidal and the Wharfdale speakers

Thanks Beardy.
its not that I get actual pleasure from the fact they are CD’s, it’s just I have quite a few. I suppose I could get a SSD (cheap at the moment) and upload them - another Avenue to look at. If the system has a USB port, maybe I could use the SSD connected - more to investigate.

Just looked up Tidal. It’s has a monthly fee like Spotify etc. so it’s not for me.
The Vault looks brilliant but way above my paygrade.

Spotify works without a subscription and I have used it but my music collection is so large and it is now all digitised onto a NAS via SONOS so I don't listen to much streaming at all. My son uses streaming all the time and does not own one piece of music in any format and that illustrates the differences between the generations. I have a Sony rotary CD player that holds 400 CD's and has about half that in CD's and I doubt I could give it away even with the CD's still in it while Mrs P. listens to streaming radio all the time via SONOS but never to the music we have stored locally.

Thanks Chris for the info. I joined free Spotify - always thought it was subscription only like Tidal.
I went out and listened to a number of systems over a few days and ended up buying a Yamaha system as it ticked all the boxes re my requirements.
Maybe not a system for true audiophiles but it suits my needs and situation. My biggest regret was getting rid of my original speakers (huge) which was one of the main reasons for downsizing the system. I compared them on the new system with the new speakers and they certainly were better to my ears.
