OK, this band was formed in the year I was born. Apart from the occasional reunion tour, they have not been active since the mid-nineties. Two of the original 5-piece line up have since passed on.

Grateful Dead worth a try for this one, with Pigpen dying in 1973 and Garcia in 1995

Not the Grateful Dead, but similar genre. This is an English band.

Okay, this US band took their name from the lyrics of a Monty Python track

Their songs have been used in the soundtracks of many movies and tv series

Well done Ian, considering minimal clues

Over to you if you'd like to pose a question.

You know, you carry this crap around in your head for years, probably taking up space that you could keep something important in like an anniversary or a birthday, and suddenly it becomes useful.
Had to double check on the web, but the Python link was what triggered the memory

OK, how about a group that was named after a sign in a British clothing store window.

"Everything But The Girl", named themselves after a sign in a furniture store. Does that count?

"They formed a duo and took their unusual name "Everything but the Girl" from the slogan of well-known Hull shop, Turners' Furniture, on Beverly Road. The store had originally put up a window sign that read, "for your bedroom needs, we sell everything but the girl," the last part of which was later added to the shop's main signage (see left)."
Quote from , they aren't infallible though.

Born November 1969, IMHO one of Australia's BEST singer/songwriter/guitarists he is relatively unknown in his homeland. However he tours extensively overseas.
