I like your first album better than your new one!
I was thinking today about artists who have released a killer first album, but were never able to top the original. It doesn't have to mean that they were on hit wonders, just that the first album was better than any other that follows ......
One clear one for me ....
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (1982).
I love the Violent Femmes and have every album that they have released but none of them have managed to eclipse the first.
Another, perhaps controversial one (given that today is 10 years from his death) .....
Jeff Buckley - Grace (1994).
Jeff only released on album while alive. For those who don't know he was working on a second album when he died. The second album, not finished, was released by Jeff's mother in 1998, Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk. We will obviously never know what the full intentions of the artist were for the second album, perhaps he would have reworked the entire thing and released a very different recording had he finished it. That being said though it has been released as his second album and doesn't quite live up to the first. Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Margo is at work, I'm home alone doing house work. Troll through my CD collection and dug out Dire Straits' first album. Turned the volume up and cleaned the kitchen.
Damn that is a fine piece of music and just listen to that guitar. MK can make it cry and sing.
Every other DS album has always been a little bit of a disappointment to me. Don't get me wrong most of them are very good and in places great. Just in my opinion not as good.
There isn't a bad track on DS first album.

You get a shiver in the dark
It's been raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie double four time
You feel all right when you hear that music ring
You step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Too much competition too many other places
But not too many horns can make that sound
Way on downsouth way on downsouth London town
You check out Guitar George he knows all the chords
Mind he's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
And an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene
He's got a daytime job he's doing alright
He can play honky tonk just like anything
Saving it up for Friday night
With the Sultans with the Sultans of Swing
And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It ain't what they call rock and roll
And the Sultans played Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
'Thank you goodnight now it's time to go home'
and he makes it fast with one more thing
