pimped my ride
Well the trailer anyway
Well I arrived last week to move the trailer axle from above the springs to below them to gain clearance. didn't like the many ropes holding on my milling ladder/ute sides/extra tool box on the front, nor how the mill/chainsaw bars/log stands/log jack and side supports were supported inside the trailer on a mid shelf plus slings, especially when soe of it had moved and damaged the cover. So since the axle job was supposed to be an easy one, he decided we could come up with a better solution .
trailer original packed.jpg
So after buying some steel SHS, some bolts & rivets and other stuff we started. First off we dropped the old axle to have decent look and whilst there looked at the bearings/springs etc. To jack up the trailer, simple, use the fork lift
trailer removing axle.jpg
Well we found the spring bushes were stuffed, and although the bearings were Ok, decided to fit new ones and keep old ones as spares. Off to the trailer/bearing shop to get some with the old springs to ensure I got the right size, where the man at the shop advised my springs were only 1.3t not the 1.5t (to match the new axle I got installed a while back) . So picked up some new springs/bushes/bearings/seats, plus a fuel take holder that was on special .
Started to fit the new springs that were slightly longer than the old ones and found the support saddles too short and we had to make new ones. Then after fitting it all on with the axle below the springs, found the trailer way too high . So we pulled it apart again and put the axle back on top of the springs giving a good 4" clearance to the mudguards when fully loaded. Next we stripped off the old tie rails down each side of the trailer in preparation for the new side racks and started trial placement of all the equipment on the sides.

We ended up making racks with caged boxes for the ladder/ute sides/mill/jack log holder/log stand locking devices. Because of the welded mesh we also riveted on some light steel angles (yellow bits) to tidy it up.

On the other side racks with aluminium floors for the jack/jack side supports/log stands/fuel holder and spare tyre.

We also made up some connection brackets for the lower front tool box to enable ratchet straps to be used to tie to upper tool box in place; a connection for a swing-down stand I bought for the rear of the trailer while packing it etc; new jockey wheel mount; all to to keep the welder busy . Then after fitting the trailer cover back on we placed all the milling equipment/fuel container/spare tyre on the sides and strapped it all in with more ratchet straps to ensure nothing moved .

Looks sweet doesn't it . It also means I have more room inside the trailer for more timber , and on the sides (still room left ), provided I'm within the load limitsNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Meanwhile, still in Melbourne and likely to be now till after new year's eve. I am travelling next via the coast and worried the school holidays peak may cause issues for accommodation.

I am sure the school holidays will cause issues with accommodation along the Great Ocean Road Neil.
Not only as far as availability goes but also cost.
We made the tactical error of going that way after Noel Watson's celebration of life in Avoca. What we hadn't taken in to account was that this was Melbourne Cup Weekend. We got to Anglesea on the Monday and the crowds were unbelievable. Called in to the caravan park (the noise, the rug rats!) and yes they had a site, $72 a night thanks very much (it is Melbourne Cup Weekend Sir!).
We finished up at Wye River, $40/night for a very very basic caravan park.
But we did spend 3 nights at Johanna River (free camp), highly recommended. We were told that the night before there wasn't a spot to be found there.

(The caravan park in Anglesea told us they don't take casual campers during the Xmas school holidays for less than a week at $600)

So where are you now Neil? Near water I hope.
Yeah, school hols will make popular camps congested but you only need a level site?

He was in Geelong yesterday.
Slow going for Neil too many people slowing him down.
But it is nice to be retired and not have any real commitments, so he saysJim Carroll

Seems like the hot spell might break Fri/Sat and you can cruise the GOR. Lovely drive. Great beaches.
Moriac I know from Club motorbike rides. Quiet spot. Fuel, pies and dunny. What else does a guy need?Cheers, Ern

I backtracked to Queenscliff to stay a few days with another uni buddy who was camping with his extended family for a few weeks. They had many sites, so I was able to just squeeze in, therefore only paying for an extra adult in lieu of a site . Went fishing yesterday on one of the tour boats that sqeezed me in on a 1/2 day tour with blokes on a bucks turn fishing trip. I caught a good feed of flathead/perch/parrot, enough to feed my mates extended family all a fillet for tea each, others on the boat were not so lucky due to the excessive beer intake . I had caught 5 fish before anyone else had even felt a bite. Sorry no photo, my 14 fish were cleaned and filleted by the operator before I got my camera out of the car (left it there so as not to drop in overboard ).
Today I headed off down the Great Ocean Road just enjoying the scenery. The towns were so crowded with tourists I only stopped at scenic vantage points, but there were plenty. I have set-up camp overnight at Apollo Bay on an unpowered site.
Attached are a couple of scenery shots, looking back on the Anglesea Beaches, and some cliffs near Lorne at Teddy's Lookout. There were two large wedgetail eagles flying about, but the little phone camera didn't pick them up.

Continued to travel down the GOR and stayed at the Cape Otway CP last night with no reception so couldn't post. Here's some pics of/from the lighthouse. I was amazed I made it up the lighthouse, luckily the steps were relatively small so easy on the knees, except the last dozen on the ladder . Great view from the top, so worth the effort
