Thread: Brissie to Airlie Beach

The best located caravan park in Oz is on the beachfront at Mooloolaba, nothing like the Whitsunday one, but fantastic if you can get in.

It's not flash like the Whitsundays either, in fact it's a camping ground rather than a park, but your next stop is 5 hours away at the Town of 1770 on a great patch of water where everyone puts out their deck chairs to watch the sun go down over the estuary over Bustard Bay:http://www.1770campinggrounds.com/

Careful though, at Mooloolaba you'll be in spitting distance!

Daz, after the sunshine coast I would give Harvey Bay a visit. Its pretty and OK for an overnight stay,


Next don't miss 1770! If youve got the dosh hire a housboat if not there is a caravan park and hire a tinny for a day. The LARC is also worth a look. If you can get out to Lady Muscrove do it.

It all gets a bit windy between there and Mackay - but if the winds not howling Yeppoon worth a squiz as is St Lawrence.

If its too windy head inland and do some prospecting at Saphire and Emerald.

Hervey Bay's a good halfway point between the two as well. You can go whale watching from there, if you go in the right school holidays (July onwards) or you can pop over to Frazer Is for a day too.

What everyone has said about 1770. Can be difficult to get into so ring ahead if possible.

For me Airlie Beach is a tick-the-box location. Full of pack packers and gateway to the barrier reef. Having seen it, I would not go back. But if you have not seen it, then tick the box.

At some caravan parks during the school holidays the tarrif can jump substantially. We have found that most of the beach locations on the way north are pretty good. The 12 year old is likely to dictate stop over locations as many of the beaches can be quiet and very suitable for us grey haired old fishermen

Having done the Sydney to as far north as Cooktown trip a few times, a round trip of approx 10-12 days is not going to give you much time at stopover locations.

Despite all of this you should enjoy the trip - great country up there.
