dash cam
After nearly having a bingle the other day, I thought I need a dash cam, the other driver must have been from another planet, I have no idea why he kept turning towards me as i took evasive action on the open road.
So can anyone steer (pun intended) me in the right direction please, for a good reliable, easy to install and use dash camera.
Have a safe Christmas, the scary part is , i was telling a mate about it, and he had two near misses - 2 days in a row, that is really scary!
Regards
Stevo

I'd like to know too, been thinking about getting one for a while. Texas has no mandatory driver training program, you get to your 16th birthday, pass written (easy) and practical driving tests (hard to fail) and you get your license.
Innovations are those useful things that, by dint of chance, manage to survive the stupidity and destructive tendencies inherent in human nature.

That is really scary. It is a bit harder in Victoria, link.
Sorry, off topic. To grow old is inevitable.... To grow up is optional

I'm interested also - dunno if it's true but heard from a friend that an insurance company wouldn't believe either party in a Bingle as there was no footage and only word of the driver's so they claimed both were at fault.....
Another way they apparently now get outta paying out (well..ntge excess at least).....so thinking it's time for me to look into these as well....
Cheers for raising this Steve, and hopefully someone comes at us with some knowledge/pointers"All the gear and no idea"

Be careful out there people - this is the time of year when lots of part-time drivers are on the road. I too have had a couple of very near misses this last week; one guy merged into my lane on the M5 as if I wasn't there forcing me onto the central reservation, and a sweet little old lady pulled out of a side road into my path when I was only 10 yards away from the junction.....lucky I have fast reflexes and ABS.
There are lots of REALLY cheap dashcams on the market, but I have a feeling we need to spend a little bit more to get something half-decent?

I upgraded my GPS 2 weeks ago. The new one has a built-in dash cam and the facility to plug in a rearwards-facing cam.
It also has heavy vehicle routes and 4wd tracks included and all the bells and whistles. It was on special for $250.
I have already captured some "interesting" video on it, conclusive proof that I am not paranoid - they ARE all really out to get me.
People really do overtake you and then slow down to slower than you were going when they overtook.
They really cut in front when changing lanes with centimetres to spare.
I have a great video of one who could not stay in her own lane. When I looked at the video she had been facing her passenger and not looking forwards for 500 metres.
I could go on ...
Cheers

I'm a little surprised you didn't ask for a picture, Crowie.
Its a Navman driveduo suv https://www.navman.com.au/products/c.../drive-duo-suv
JB Hifi had them on special for $299 and then Navman themselves had a $50 cashback by redemption. Brought it down to $249.
You get free monthly map updates but it still is not current with melbourne roads.I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.

I went through this decision making process about 18 months ago. Still happy with my decision.

A necessary part of the car kit these days ,unfortunately still see a lot of mobile(pardon the pun) use these days whilst driving instead of a blue tooth option.
We had a near miss today , a Mum with a car full of arms & legs doing last minute Chrissie runabout nearly collected us as she was exiting a shopping centre.
Merry Christmas to all be safe ,be well & live the dream!Johnno

I will keep doing some research, I like the Idea of a High Temp resistant Cam, Plus the idea of a Capacitor instead of batteries, wi-fi is a added bonus, saves hiding cables.

On Xmas eve afternoon a 4wd over took me slowly on a two lane dual carriage way.
I was in the left hand lane doing 70 GPS kph which was the limit so the other car would have been just over the limit.
I also noticed the driver was texting and had her face and eyes down turned
As we approached a largish roundabout (~50 m diameter) the other driver just drove straight through and up over the centre island of the roundabout - straight through a couple of bushes and out the other side.
She missed a car travelling around the other side of the roundabout by a couple of metres and because the road curved at the roundabout the 4WD bounced out out of the centre island onto the wrong side of the carriage way luckily there were no cars on that side and the driver mounted the kerb and crossed the median strip and continued on her way.
Jees I wish I had a dash cam for that one.
