I always cover ourselves when travelling overseas but in the 30 odd years of travelling interstate and hiring cars, I have never got domestic cover......never had an accident in a rental either.
It was only after a couple of friends had bingles last year, I realised that my luck will run out at sometime with the amount of wildlife in Tassie.

I wasn't thinking about conventional travel insurance -- lost / stolen luggage, cancelled flights, health, injury, etc -- I was thinking that some comprehensive car policies include cover for when you are driving a rental or can be extended to cover a rental when your own vehicle is off the road (broken down, etc). The rationale being that the risk represented by your driving is the same whether you are in your own car or a rental.

The number of times I have had to use hire cars I figure I've saved enough on not paying hire company extra premiums to cover the policy excess. Anyway have you checked how much more the hire car company policy excess is greater than a normal car policy excess these days? Most kangaroo accidents seem to happen when driving at dust/night (Kangaroo Island excepted ), perhaps just avoid driving then if you can. I did have a hire car damaged in a Melbourne street by a neighbour backing out of their driveway. Hertz immediately took the $xk contingency charge off my credit card even though the accident did not involve me.Thankfully the offender left a note on the windscreen with his details. It took at least 2 months for Hertz to refund the contingency money after the other party insurance company paid up.
Over the years I have had cause to claim several times on other overseas travel insurances and also purchase protection from a Platinum Card. I have never had any problems. I always presented a claim in my best business practise expense claim style including all dates, times and receipts. No problems when the underwriter was Allianz either.
Biggest gripe I have with Australian car rentals is that you are generally not covered for driving on ANY unsealed roads and/or islands. Doesn't matter what insurances you have paid for, you have no cover - period!Franklin

Unsealed roads is an interesting one...I have travelled in rentals on unsealed road.....Tasmania & Mexico......but only dedicated roads. I never take a rental "off road" onto a track.

Not allowed on unsealed road, not just off road. Technically you can't even go down an access road into many a National park, just off a sealed road. We wanted to fly to Adelaide and rent a car to go through the Flinders Ranges and up to Arkaroola. You would think that if you can hire a 4wd from the major rental companies that would mean you can go on gravel roads. Wrong.
We ended up hiring from a truck rental company that specialized in rentals for mining industry. Ended up in a White Hilux. Much more street cred outback as well.
You can't even take a hire car from Hobart onto Bruny Island. Just about anywhere you want to go there is on a sealed road.Franklin

Travel insurance
Having spent my working life in and around the travel industry I can tell you that any insurance is a mine field!
You need to fully familiarise yourself with their conditions and especially exclusions just as you would with your household and motor vehicle policies (you do read those? don't you?). You must also fully read the rental agreement and the parts of the agreement they highlight to bring to your attention and then say "Sign here, here and here"!!
We were is Tassie last year and wanted to go to Bruny Island but the hire company's vehicles were not covered on Bruny so we gave it a miss and went to Strahan instead. Fuzzie is spot on with the 'unsealed' comment and the hire companies just hitting your credit card - you authorised them to do so by signing the hire contract!
Before you head off and go Platinum card insurance, or whatever insurance, ensure you read all the policy exclusions. As the Las Vegas handbag incident shows - it is all in the wording and the interpretation of the wording. If in doubt ask the insurance company for clarification 'in plain and simple English'. Having said that the insurance industry was moving to plainer English in all their policy wording some years ago. Get your clarification of exclusion clauses in writing from them and save the correspondence to back up any possible claim.
Never purchase insurance on price only, always look for the best cover for your particular situation.
I have dealt with numerous insurance companies over the years for my clients and for my own personal needs and no one is better than the other, it is all dependent on where you go, when you go, what you intend to do and what they exclude!

I just read the T&Cs for the company I always use and ....
Correct...you can not take it to Bruny Island but as far as Gravel roads are concerned it seems OK under some conditions...see attached

There must have been some changes. I just had a look and the Budget and Avis terms look word for word. Hertz still don't allow it:
PROHIBITED USES
......
• the vehicle is driven in the following areas
and the vehicle is not a 4WD:
– on unsealed roads (except for roads under
repair, access roads to recognised camping
or accommodation grounds (unless rented in
Tasmania where a non-reducible unsealed
roads excess is applicable, details can be
found at Access Denied
or unless specified in writing by Hertz));Franklin

I use Budget all the time and never had any problems...never been with Hertz and this just gives me a reason not to.
I drive a lot in Tassie.
That means Hertz rentals are not allowed up through the centre along the Highland Lakes Road. There is about 30km of unsealed road north of Miena and that's the main road through to Deloraine.
