Default Local knowledge Broken Hill required

I travelled the Broken Hill and Silverton area last September and
am keen to go back again late in June (next month).

Whilst there last time I noticed many undulating floodways on
the roads with height indicators but they had not experienced
    heavy rains.

Does anyone know if they have a "wet" season in that area and
    if so, when.

I worked in The Hill for 18 months 30 years ago

    I remember those "undulations" well

the problem is not that Broken Hill has a wet season, more that rain when it happens is likely to be a thunderstorm — the creeks go up and down fairly quickly and can flood from a storm 50+km away.
The height indicators are to warn you against entering a dip that you think (from the level appraoch) has only a few cm of water in but in reality has >1m

When you go out to Umberumberka enjoy the view from "my" look out

    Default The Hill

Broken hill is nominally a winter rainfall area but, as Ian has indicated that means little.

The water can rise extremely quickly and has trapped any number of people who are either unaware or take stupid risks.

By the way, that area is plurry cold at night in winter!

Silverton Hotel is an interesting place. I have never seen a sign outside it that advertises any sort of alcoholic drink.

Might like to gather some Mulga while up there.

    Thanks Arthur.

Will check out the signage at the Silverton Hotel. They have some
very funny items for sale in there .. bought some when there last
    September.

As for Mulga - there was a bloke in a little store there who does
up old coins and sells them. He had a little wallaby as a pet
squatted near his counter. I was not interested in buying his coins
but keen on getting one piece of Mulga from his wood pile which he
used in his wood heater. He would not sell me the piece but gave
me one. In return I bought a couple of his raffle tickets on offer.

When I go back, now departing on 19th June, I will give him a Mulga
pen which I have made for him as a surprise.

I have just returned from my trip to Broken Hill and had
    a great time.

By a prior arrangement I met up with Bruce ("Bellyup")
and swapped some wood with him. He is a thorough
gentleman and it was great to share time with him.

We will be keeping in touch.

My apologies Ian - have only just returned to this category.

Weather was great for the whole time.
Despite getting my car serviced three days before leaving Wallan,
and going back to report a strange noise the day before leaving,
the car broke down 117 kms from Broken Hill on the way home.
The tow truck took us back to Broken Hill where the tensioner
pulley on the fan belt was replaced as it had shattered.
Our full coverage on R.A.C.V. (our motorist's insurance company)
saw us in good stead. They arranged the tow truck to Broken Hill,
a taxi back to a motel, and rooms at the motel for the night.
We left next morning and had a safe trip home.

    The highlights:
    * Seeing "The Big Picture" (a giant mural) at Broken Hill again.
    * Checking the landscape from the Mundi Mundi Lookout.
    * Having a look at the Umberumberka Reservoir.
    * Meeting Bruce (Forumite "Bellyup") and swapping wood with him.
    * Observing the multitude of colours of the hundreds of wild goats
    between Mildura and Broken Hill.

    Sorry, no pics.
